Looking for some info on building a small farm utility vehicle using a 10 hp -15 hp gas engine (a poor man's 'Gator'). Would be used to shift a few bales of hay or 100lb bag of feed around the place. Ease of operation similar to a golf cart (ie - just get in and go) but not as pricey. I can weld and have B & S 12 hp engine. Need some ideas and/or plans.

Any one out there ever do this or have any input? I appreciate your thoughts.

I have a rig along these lines I've been working on. It started out with a 2-cyl wisconsin engine that came off a highway sander, complete with a hydraulic pump, that was given to me. I wanted to use it to power my woodsplitter as well as presses in my welding shop, so I decided to put wheels on it. I had a hydraulic motor so the next step was power the wheels using a variable speed valve and provide steering. I've reached that point. I'm in the process of puting a woodsplitter valve in the system so I will have reverse as well as stopping ability. I plan to put a small forklift mast on to load haywagons, since arthritis has limited the height I can throw bales. One friend I showed it to commented that I had too much time on my hands.

I brought one of those 3pt utility carriers from TSC for 69.95 and built a platform on it with some scrap lumber that was laying around. Use it on a small tractor to move about 10bales around to feed livestock or haul feed or what ever. Works good for me.

Save some time and buy an old beater golf cart (gas powered). You could probably repower it with a bigger engine, if that's your desire or fix it up to use as is. Can't beat the bench seat (for all the kids to ride up front) and the extra room behind the steering wheel when wearing winter clothes.

I bought a used one about a year ago with lug tires on the back and a dandy little bed made of aluminum with tailgate (it looks like a dump bed, but unfortunately doesn't really dump). It is the handiest vehicle I have for running about the acreage to spray weeds and such.

If you can find the plans for a 'Power Pup' tractor (Science & Mechanics or Popular Science.....early '60s) I think it would be just what you're looking for.....let me know if you find the plans.....I'd like to build one, too.

I have a Suzuki Samuria that I use as a farm vehicle. It is bigger than you want but I bought it wrecked and have less than $500 in it after I put new tires on it. It is legal to drive on the road and with 4wd it will go pretty much anywhere. It's only 5' wide and weights in at 2,000lbs so it's not very big but it works as hard as anything on the farm.

Look around for a ratty rear engine riding mower. With the engine on the back, they don't get stuck easily like their front engine bretheren do. Cob/fab a bed thingie in the back out of an old wheelbarrow.

Better still, buy/get a good rear engine riding mower, then you can use it for mowing as well, and keep the number of toys down to a more manageable level.

More than one has been featured in Farm Show. There is a back issue CD available somewhere because I got one for Christmas.

I thought of doing the same thing a few months ago and asked for advice on this board. I was going to build a 12-18Hp hydrostatic drive machine with hydraulics to run implements. But after adding up the cost ($5K) I thought I would be better off not doing it and then I built a small 13HP woodchipper instead for about $900. Besides if I would have built my own tractor it wouldnt be worth much after it was completed.
