BOUGHT THE TRACTOR SATURDAY. CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN THE EXACT RELATIONSHIP OF MCCORMICK, IHC, FARMALL,DEERING. IT SEEMS THAT FARMALL IS MORE NUMEROUS OR SOMETHING. I LOVE THAT LITTLE TRACTOR ALREADY. NEED TO FIND ALL I CAN ABOUT IT. YOU SHOULD HEAR IT. I KNOW MY QUESTION PROBABLY SOUNDS IGNORANT TO YOU FOLKS BUT I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING THE WEB AND ANSWERS ARE NOT APPARENT.

From one Elden to another Eldon--I spent many hours on the '48 W-6 my uncle bought in the spring of 1950. This tractor was in excellant condition, the orginal rear tires were about 75% remaining tread(Goodrich Silvertown 14-30's). It was our "big tractor" for many years, finally being traded for a 560D Farmall in 1964. The tractor is still in this area and is operational. The W-6 is a nice size standard tractor, powerful, but not too heavy or big in physical size to be excessively clumsy or ungainly. You could do anything with it except plant and cultivate row crops, or mount corn or cotton pickers on it. The only shortcomings of this tractor for me were not having any hydraulics and, not having power steering, it handled a little difficult on plowed or soft ground. I always liked how easy the tractor was to mount and dismount and the cozy platform between the full rear fenders. International Harvester's tractor line of the 30's, 40's and 50's featured the Farmall row crop tractor with their basic tricycle design and the McCormick-Deering(1940-1949) or McCormick(1949-1954)standard or wheatland("W") tractors. The row crop and standard tractors shared common engines and many driveline parts and their sheet metal designs show "family relationship" due to the clever designs of one of the most famous industrial designers of the time, Raymond Loewy.

Elden I own a couple of WD9's ( see post in IH Section) I also own H's an M's an a F20 along with a Farmall 340D/TA - but my real love is the wheatland tractors next to my 1938 F20 - these are good looking tractor but not much is ever said about them nor are there many pictures - There are a few people around that have restored W4's an W6's but because of there size and weight not many people under take the task of restoring W series tractors I guess - I am about to redo one of my WD9's I have all the manuels and a few friends that own some so good luck with yours an I hope to put up pic of my W series tractors in the future - I have also toyed with the idea of putting up a web page just about W series tractors with info about them but that is in the future when I have lots of time :o) Charlie V aka F20II on yt mag

IHC, or International Harvester Company, is the manufacturer. 'Farmall' was the name for the rowcrop line of tractors, while 'McCormick-Deering' was the name for the standard-tread or wheatland version of the Farmalls. There were far more Farmall versions sold than McCormick-Deering versions. McCormick Harvesting and Deering Harvester merged in 1902 to form IH. A McCormick-Deering W-6 is the standard-tread version of the Farmall M. Your W-6 is one of 1,180 built in 1943. It is rated at 33hp at the drawbar and 36hp at the PTO/belt.

Parts are available from any Case IH dealer, as are the owner's manual, service manuals, and parts book.

And at least in the 50s-60s, International was their designation for their utility models, while Farmall was the row-crop version of the same tractor.
