We live in Minnesota on a very small horse farm 4 horses. We are looking for a tractor just to be able to plow our drive way, pull a brush hog just to mow our 5 acres of pasture. I found compact John Deere 650 for 7800 with 1060 hours on it. comes with Front loader, back blade, and a few other extras. Is this two much for this tractor and would this do the job? I forgot to ask how much horse power the tractor has and been trying to find one on this site with no luck. Thank you

$7800.00 is somewhat high for the tractor and equipment. I have owned a 650 since 1987 and am well pleased with it. I use it for pulling a 5' flail mower,4' harrow and using a loader. I expect it would be some what disappointing for pushing snow w/o 4 wheel drive, which was an option.I changed from ag tires to turf tires, because with turf tires and the differential lock it would push more than the ag tires, which would spin down in a narrow rut very quickly. The tractor is tough, but has not got a live p.t.o. which some times can be a bother if you are not thinking ahead when mowing, I added power steering so that I could turn it after I added the loader, also added selective control valves for the loader. I have got 1200+ hrs on mine and except for one stupid mistake of spraying it with ether(DEFINETLY A NO-NO!had to put pistons in it)!I have had very little problems with it, it is a good unit if you remember it's only 14.5 flywheel h.p. It has one or two drawbacks in the fuel system, they do not have but one fuel filter, I installed a oil burner spin-on type filter in line after the factory bowl, and to really boost the pulling power I inatalled a small electric fuel pump in the fuel system, it was always sort of weak in stock form, but was much more powerful with the pump, and would actully get enough fuel to produce black smoke under a hard pull instead of dying down. All in all it is a good unit, just remember it is a small compact tractor. Just a foot note; I have a loader for one to sell cheap if any body needs it. I have nothing but good words for mine. Price seems way to high. I know where there is a JD 950 with 600 hours for $5500. No loader though.

I have a 750, next size up. I think the 650 is too small, and I also think the price is WAY out of line for that tractor with that many hours on it. I'd keep looking.

Whoa! Those JD bing a lot of dough! I live MN too. I think you could get a lot more tractor/implements for what you want to spend. If you're particular to the JD's get a 2510, 2520 or a 3010 with a loader. Or you could go with a international 560, 656, 706.. It's probably more tractor than you need though. I wouldn't write off the older gas tractors yet. Just make sure you get something with live pto, live hydraulics, wide front and powersteering and a 3 pt hitch. It's usually cheaper to buy a tractor with a loader vs buying a loader separately.

Here's a link to a guy in northern minnesota who fixes and resells tractors. His advice is free too...

One of their retired mechanics restores and sells the older tractors. They usually have 6-10 on the dealer lot. Or he can usually find a specific one for you.

Personally I think you could get buy with a JD 60 or 70, or a Farmall 300, 350, 400, 450 easily. You can get a really nice restored/overhauled one in the $3000 to $4000 range. Then you'd have some money left over for a bush hog and a loader.

Just someting I remembered. A guy I work with had a JD950. It was a nice tractor, power good, but had one BIG drawback; the PTO was a ground speed driven! That was a real problem when he was using his bushhog. For me, a live PTO is a must for about everything using PTO power. (Just my $0.02 worth)

You must have it mixed up with some other model. The JD 950 has live PTO. I can run my 950 PTO with the tractor sitting still in neutral or in any gear at any speed. Has a 2 stage clutch. PTO clutch engages first, then the drive clutch.

Price sounds right for around here. I agree with the other post, that's pretty small. Most of my neighbors with "hobby farms" that size are using 30-50hp. That said, that small 50 series are great. One of my friends has a 1350(?) I think little turbo 3 cyl about 50+ hp. It is one fine machine. They are made in Japan by Satoh (I think). Really good engineering for a light tractor.

The 50 series were made by yanmar who still make the small engines in JD's lineup. Great engines.
