I'm about to tear into the hydraulic system on my IH 300U for the first time. This will be my first experience repairing any hydraulic system.

What's the best material to use, if any, when reconnecting hydraulic fittings and lines? Should I use Teflon tape, plumber's pipe dope or what?

Many thanks.

Bob Kirk

I've been told that the tape/dope doesn't really seal, it just helps lubricate the threads & allows you to screw tighter (& dismantle easier) the parts. Since any hydraulic parts I work with seem to be bubbling with oil, there is pretty good lubrication on the threads already....

Then, I've been told that you can cause lots of problems with loose tape or dope floating through you hyd system if you are not _very_ careful. So, it's best to just totally skip all such products entirely, and tighten down well.

Don't know if that is right, but that is what various people who work on tractors have told me when I asked.

Hi Bob , I would , and did use pipe dope. But just not plain pipe dope. They make a special pipe dope for petroleum/chemical base products. My uncle was a plumber for Rochester Gas & Electric. He is the one who told me. It is called "Leak-Lock". It comes in a gray colored sqeeze tube. And the pipe dope itself is also grey in color.

Hi again Bob , Just for fun , I looked on the internet. I didn't find the pipe dope I was talking about. But I did find another called "TU555 pipe sealing compound".

Bob , look at www.plumbingsupply.com. Under thread sealing compound you will see TU555. It mentions hydraulic oil.

Hi Bob, in a hyd system teflon tape is an excellent sealant for one time use. If you have to take that fitting apart again, it is nearly impossible to clean it all out of the female fitting and may have problems per Ray's post. I have had good luck with Leaklock™ on all taper thread fittings. If the the joint is compression or flare, a sealant is not recommended but lubricate the threads to aid torque. Regards, Joe

Bob; Tape or dope are both good and will get the job done!. If you use tape(teflon) be SURE that no tape is over the end, as to restrict the flow of fluid, it doesn't take much to screw up the flow and cause you some pressure problems!!!, and a hard problem to solve what is wrong!!!!! be careful.....

It's best to stay away from the teflon tape, it tends to stray into valves and cause problems when you least can afford down time.
