I am just getting into this game and was wondering if I should keep the calcium in my tires or go to strictly metal weights. I have a 1940 JD-A and a 1940 Farmall-H. One of the rims is showing signs of leakage, so now would be the time to change if I need to. I am just trying to have some fun at the local fairs and carnivals here in western PA and don't farm anymore. Thanks for your imput.

At a true antique tractor pull wheel weights are the only way weights are allowed, no weights an front end or haging on any place, and only fluid or 1 set of weights, not both and none of the other modifications are allowed, if came with pto then the pto must remain, no alterations to drawbar. Just worked on the line up at our show pull yesterday, and a few things that were not right brought up a couple of conferences with it, decided we have to figure how to reword the rulls to corect that.

Hey Leroy, are you one of the guys who insist that a tractor to be pulled must "look" factory original?? In my 20 years of tractor pulling experience, most of these "factory" machines are the same ones with double the original cubic inches and double the rpm's of the original. I've seen too many JD A's run down the track with a bee-hive sound under the hood. Our A was governed at 900 rpm's when we farmed with it. Weights on a tractor front end adds a measure of safety!

Adding alot of weight to the rear of your tractor for a perminate stand point the fluid is a good way to go. The only downfall is the leaky tubes and tires cause rims to rust out. The bolt on wheel weights, or other iron weights have more advantages to tractor pulling however than the fluid. The weight can be distributed around the tractor as you desire (not just in the wheels). It is also easier to take off and put on which alot of people do to get in the lighter, or heavier weight class. They can pull in two or three weight classes that way instead of just the one. I have been to pulls and seen the same tractor pull alot of different times in different classes and with different driver in the same class. Takes alot of the fun out of it when you are sitting in the stands watching. I am not a tractor puller myself but have several old tractors. When I fix one up I try to keep it as standard and as original as I can. I walk down the line of tractors at the antique pulls and I see altercation after altercation. Seen an M Farmall one time with aluminum frame rails. Seen a H farmall one time that was stripped down to the bear necessity's (pretty much engine, battery, transmission, gas tank). Maybe its just me but I think it is kind of sad to see a peice of history distructed into something just to pull a sled. I find it alot more fun to go to tractor shows, swap meets, enter in parades, and use my tractors around the farm as much as I can. Just my two cents worth.

Hey Dweeb
My personal thought is to remove the fluid from your tires and use weights that you can add / remove or change location on your tractor juts my opinion
