Ok guys, time to buy a new tractor...hate to sound too much like a poor-mouther but I'm all about how much my monthly payment is on this one. Have it narrowed down to MF 231S and Kubota MX5000....difference is that Kubota is $25.00 per month more...about a 2K difference in the price of the tractor. Kubota is 5HP more but rated at higher RPM to get that 50HP...MF is 45HP but rated at about 500RPM less. Is Kubota really that much better? Thanks in advance....

A friend of mine has a neighbor that has a kubota lawn tractor and it is breaking shear pins and linkage parts often, while cutting grass. personally I would go with the MF. My 2 cents.

Let me guess, it's one of them gas powered/belt driven ones? I see a bunch of these at the dealer do the same thing. Not a problem with the bigger ones (when you get into the diesel ones mostly, but some gas ones) usually, as they are built heavier.

I know that the MF is a heavier tractor, but I think the kubota is the better of the two, but whether it's worth a $2000 difference I'm not sure. As far as hard to work on, I work at a dealer and I don't think they are any harder than any other new tractor. Seriously, as it has been said before, go with the better dealer. Dealer support is worth more to me than the difference in cost.

I had a similar choice last fall when I felt I had to replace my MF 165. I bought a Kubota M5700 4wd which has more HP than my old Massey, but less weight. So far, I like the Kubota. It being lighter has made it more manueverable; ask me again in July after I bale hay if I still like its smaller weight.

I dunno about its repair costs, but there are more good Kubota dealers here in SE Wis than there are Massey dealers. I was not happy with my nearest MF dealer and the next one is about 50 miles away.

We had a Massey and a Kubota, both smaller then yours, We decided to have the Massey, they are so much easier to operate, eventhough the Kubota had a full cab, heating etc. The kubota just wasn't as good as the Massey.

Olly.

Thanks Oliver...I also called my father-in-law this pm. He has a Kubota and has been farming w/ it for 3-4 yrs now. He was dead-set against it and told me to get the Massey...he said the big factor was that the Kubota was harder to work on and the parts were so much more expensive.

I just went through the same thing you are going through when I replaced my Massey Ferguson 165. I was split between the Kubota M4900 and the Massey 243. They were both about the same price. They both had advantages and disadvantages. I ended up buying the Massey 243 partly due to being familiar and comfortable with MF and I like my local dealer. Either way they are both good tractors. You should buy the one you feel more comfortable with. Test drive both of them as well. Both of my local dealers offered to let me test drive them on my property with attatched equipment.

Guys, thanks...I bought the Massey after looking at both of them inside/out for a couple of weeks. Appreciate the advice! I'll let you know how it goes!

Sold a 2 wheel drive MF 165 for a brand new Kibota 4 wheel drive with a little 6 cylinder engine. The kubota was a heap of trash the engine would not lug as soon as it lost revs you would have to go to a lower gear. The handbrake was flimsy and let the tractor roll down a hill just about killing my mother when she got off it. It had a shuttle transmission with no decent gear for mowing or hay raking. I was glad to sell it. Now have a IH 674
