Front wheel assist.....Four wheel drive

Could someone tell me the difference between FWA and FWD? I have a New Holland 1925....is it a FWA or a FWD? When I engage the front wheels they dig just like the back. I don't have the option of differential locks. Please clear this up for me.

The Nebraska Tests book I have, refers to tractors that have a front that is full time(cannot be disengaged) as 4wd, and the ones that can be disengaged as front wheel assist

Broken wrench is right. Oliver had both at the same time. "Mechanical" Four Wheel Drive and "Power assist" Four Wheel Drive. The machanical four wheel drive put power to the front wheels useing a drive shaft. Power assist four wheel drive used hydraulic motors on each front wheel. In other words , the power assist four wheel drive was not really a true four wheel drive. The front wheels just kind of helped (assisted) the rear wheels. I read that Oliver had problems with the power assist four wheel drive. With out looking it up , I belive the hydralic motors got hot and failed.

While parts failed, it was as much a case of the hydraulic setups just not providing enough 'assist' as folks wanted. The mechanicals were just better all around, so the hyd assist units faded away. They lasted longer on combines, where any assist at all on the back wheels is helpful, and many combines are hydro to begine with so it's more practical to use hydro for the rears.

Normally, FWA, AWD, are the same thing. 4WD is refering to any tractor that has the same size wheels/tires all around. Some think FWA is only refering to the hydraulic drive JD tried (and failed) but actually it refers to any means to drive the front axle. At least that's generally how the mfg's i've talked to refer to it all. Robert

Jerry, FWA is either a mechanical or hydraulic powered front axle on a convensional row-crop tractor. FWD on the other hand is refering to a center-articulated tractor such as a Steiger for example.

FWD is a mechanically connected front axle drive similar to the older 4wd pickups. A drive shaft connects the front axle to the trans. FWA is a non-mechanical link to the front wheels usually hydraulic motors in the front wheels they only assist the rear axle.

Funny really, isn't it? Two wheel drive only drives through one? wheel (at a time) unless you have a diff lock applied, and some 4 wheel drives - the road 'AWDs' - may only be driving through one wheel..... Of course this is more noticeable when you are stuck in mud with only one wheel spinning! The only true all wheel drives, I suspect, are those with a locking centre differential and diff locks on both axles, or a drive train comparable to this. Here in Britain tractors are designated as 2 or 4 wheel drive simply depending on whether or not the front wheels can be driven. Just my 2p worth, RAB

I have always understood 4WD to mean(in relation to tractors) that all wheels are always driving and that they are all the same size ,while fwa means that the front wheels are smaller and only assist the rear wheels and can be disengaged. In trucks they are called 4WD ,but are classed as full time or part time.FWD on the other hand -to me -means front wheel drive -as in most cars nowadays -alomg with the AWD's (all wheel drive) confusing, ain't it!!!
