Hydraulic cylinder rebuilding questions

I have a JD 1010 loader with a backhoe. I have just started having problems with the loader and have some questions. With the bucket curled all the way up and the control lever in neutral the bucket slowly curls over to the dump position as if the cylinders were leaking internally. Also if I push into a pile of dirt and try to curl the bucket up it will not move and I can hear the hydralic pump straining. There are no leaks and the fluid level is ok. With no load on the bucket it will curl up fine. All other hydraulics are working fine. Is this problem normally caused by internally leaking cylinders or control valve problems? Is there any way I can narrow this down to one or the other? I would hate to pull my cylinders and try to find rebuild kits for them only to find out they are ok. This just happened out of the blue, working fine one minute and not working the next. If I have to rebuild the cylinders is it normally just an oring replacement? I have never done one before but have an idea of how they work. Thanks for any info or tips.

it sounds to me like your valve is the problem, as the previous post also suggested. one thing to try, if possible on your rig, switch the hoses around (so that when you push the lever forward, it curls the bucket back instead of dumping it), and try it. if the valve is the problem, you will be able to curl the bucket back ok, but will stall out when trying to raise the front of the tractor with the bucket.

Thats a good idea to swap the hoses, maybe it will let me use the loader for awhile until I can get the control apart. I agree the control should be the problem, I dont see how both cylinders could go bad. What normally goes bad in a control unit? Just a matter of orings going flat or cut?

Sounds like you have a control valve internal leak, You can test cylinders by extending the cylinder to the maximum travel, support it then plug the oil ports to the cylinder on both ends, then when you take the support away,( best to support from above so you don't have to work under it), if the cylinder is bypassing it will go all the way down,if it is not bypassing, it will sag some then stop. A cylinder that is bypassing will usually be hotter than the others if it is bypassing much. Be very careful when preforming these tests, hydrualic oil can be blown under the skin sometimes under pressure and as always you need to be sure of your support's ability to hold the load and remember that when you open a hydrualic line, always work the control valve to relieve the pressure. Hydrualic oil will always expand to at least 100 times more volume outside the system once you start working with it so expect oil everywhere, and remember that dirt, and trash kill a hydrualic system very quickly, so have every thing ready to use when you open it and keep it clean, and use goggles when opening a line. Safety and cleanliness on this type of work should be the first concern! Gene Davis
