In one of my books "International Tractors 1955 to 1984" it talks a little bit about the 460 and 560. Has anybody read this book? It says that the 560 had an under designed rear end and that IH had a massive recall program on the 560. It also says that sales of the 560 dropped from about 22,000 to around 6,000 in a couple of years. Does anybody remember this? This happend right around the time John Deere introduced the 4010. Was this the reason why IH lost their top spot to JD in the early 60's and could never regain it. I am not bashing IH. I like all tractors. I'm also interested in the history of farm companies. I would just like to know if the 560 rear end problems brought the house down on IH.

The 560's and 460 problems certainly hurt the company but from what I've read the real downfall was a management problem. If you don't have competent management then it doesn't matter how good the quality is. IH was making very good tractors again after the 560's long before the company folded. I'd give you a list of other companies that folded primarily due to bad management but the internet doesn't have enough room to hold them all.

ACCORDING TO A BOKK ON IH BY RANDY LEFFINGWELL
IH ENGINEERING WAS PUSHED TO QUICKLY TO INTRODUCE
A NEW TRACTOR EVERY 2 YEARS (SAME AS AUTOMAKERS
BACK THEN.) AND BASICALY PUT THE NEW DESIGNED
6 CYL MOTORS ONTO A FARMALL M REAR SECTION.
THE GAS MOTORED 560 DID'NT HAVE TO MANY PROBLEMS BUT THE DIESELS DID. IH HAD DESIGN NEW REAREND
PARTS TO HANDLE THE TORQUE. THE IH 660 WAS WORSE.
IH NEVER REALLY RECOVER FROM THAT AND POOR MANAGEMENT/HIGH INT RATES IN THE LATE 70'S AND EARLY 80'S AND TO MUCH PRODUCTION DID THEM IN. THE 806 WAS A GOOD TRACTOR THEY WENT THREW 24,000 HOURS OF TESTING
BEFORE PUTTING TO FULL PRODUCTION. TO OTHER POST BY ANDY ALL OF THE 560 AND 660 WERE REPAIRED AT IH COST UNDER WARRENTY SO ANY ONE WHO HAS ONE NOW SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY TROUBLE. LONG LIVE IH
NOW IN THE NEW McCORMICK TRACTORS BUILT IN DONCASTER UK PLANT. I SAW ONE A C70 SAME REAREND
TRANSMISSION FENDERS AS MY IH 484 THEY ARE STILL
BUILDING BASICALLY THE SAME TRACTOR AS IH DID IN
THE LATE 70'S. WHAT CAN YOU SAY THE IH 84 SERIES,
CASE IH 85, 95, 4200, AND C, CX SERIES. WERE AN EXCELLENT DESIGN. STILL BEING USED.

From what I've read, the John Deere 720 had already just about kicked in the door. IH needed a real winner to stay ahead of the 730 and it's enhanced operator conveniences. Unfortunately, what they did instead was put the 6 cyl 263 cid and 283 cid truck engines in the same chassis (essentially) as the original 1939 M. The M was a 40hp tractor and the 560 had 60hp (before tuners turned them up) and it had real problems being stout enough to handle, reliably, under FIELD conditions, the hp that the engine (and they were GOOD engines) put out. When John Deere introduced the 4010 the following year, it so clearly outclassed the 560 that IH never recovered. At least their 4010 fighter, the 806, was properly developed and tested. THEY were very good mechanically even if John Deere still led by a ways in operator convenience, refinement, and ease of operation.

The 560 HAD to be a big winner for IHC if the company was not to lose their top spot. Unfortunately, the 560 was NOT the big winner, so it carries a lot of blame for IHCs ultimate demise. JMHO!

I agree that IH rushed the 560 into production. The had a good head start on hitting the home run. It appears that from the clutch forward, they had design down. But they did handle the problems properly from the customers point of view. They did not try to cover it up. Which may have lead to the drop in sales.

Oh, and I currently have a 560 and love it. 4010s are sharp looking tractors too, but I have never had the opportunity to run one.

I ran 2 560's for years and never had a minutes problem with either of them. They were by far superior to JD's of their time.
