I worked on fence trying out your suggestions. As i said, the phone and household grounds were together. I had a ground rod nearby left from an earlier electric fence, also a ground rod for radios on other end of house. I connected a wire to the house ground from both of thes ground rods, no change in the clicking on the phone. Ray advised checking household ground connections, will have to get an electrician to do that. I disconnected the wire from the other ground rods. Connected a 12 volt battery charging system to the fence and went to local, knowledge dealer I got the charger from, but the man who worked on them was not in. I was wondering about a possible problem in the charger's ground circuit. I have a 4 leg windmill tower I use as a radio tower which has 4 ground rods attached to the tower legs with #6 copper wire and stainless steel screws. I took the charger to the tower and attached it to the ground system and to the fence which is next to it. Ran a 100 ft drop cord, hooked it up, NO clicking on phone. Kyplowboy, must be something about this eastern climate, because you said you had needed 4 grounds. Another poster said his directions called for 3. I guess I will have to figure some way to run a ground wire from my preferred location for the charger to the tower. I don't want get 3 more $20 ground rods. I'll have to cross 2 gates. Oh well, thanks again for the help. I will look into Coloken's comments about an in line filter.

If you have a poor ground at the charger the high voltage will try to return to the power co ground rod.The fuses wont stand much of this.Older chargers had a spark gap lightning arrestor that will let the returning hi voltage jump to the power co ground.Since you have proved a better ground stops the click, thats what you have to do.The click on the phone line will interfere with computer dial up.Copper clad rods used to sell for 10.00 when I stocked them.Galvanized rods could be used instead.Poor ground rods cause a lot of trouble in fence chargers.Do not try to run a charger on GFIs and dont use a charger that says do not use outdoors where the rain can get at it.Water will get in thru the fuse holders ,drip on the circuit board and destroy it.I find plenty of 30 amp fuses in chargers, that burns up transformers.Use 1 amp only.Bit of wire and steel make poor fuses.Old buggy axles and rebar and assorted rusty iron and steel used for grounds wont work..

If you have a water well for your house you can tie onto the steel casing, if it aint to far away.
