Howdy folks. I'd like to know any good or bad points about this truck. My uncle has a '91 Ford F250 extended cab truck. Has 7.3 diesel, 5 speed manual, 2 wheel drive. 140,000 miles. Has spent it's life outside, but in San Antonio, so it has no rust. New paint about a year ago. Air con needs to be recharged. New power steering pump, and clutch. It doesn't run because he says that the fuel tank switch is broken, so it doesn't know which one to pick, so it doesn't pick at all. It turns over but won't start. A light blinks the switch. He says that it just needs to be replaced. We've done a lot for him in the past, so he's willing to give it to us, and will be running. He just bought an Excusion diesel, so he no longer has a use for it. Thanks.

I have a 92 with same engin and tranny. Just turned over 250K miles and it still starts like day one. Replaced glow plugs twice ($10 each) and clutch once ($700).....

As far as the fuel tank switch is concerned, you might be able to get that fixed free. I have a '92 F150 gas engine and I received a recall notice from Ford to replace the tank switch and solenoid between the front and rear tanks.

Just a thought, heck a free truck and free repair.
What a country!!

Grab it while the grabbing is good! The International diesel is a great engine. Like the others said, make sure that the coolant has the supplemental additive in it! Punch this link for more info on all of the International engined-Fords:

I'm not really a big fan of Fords, but, hey free is free. I'd go for it.
Good luck.

Is that the international engine? if so its just getting broken in at 140K miles. while looking for a truck, i saw a 93 F250 stroke with 386,000 miles. i talked to the company and individual that drove the truck. in that length of time the only power train problem was a new fuel injector pump (about $450). thats when i started looking for a powerstroke truck.

I don't see a down side to that deal. I doubt if you could get a better truck any cheaper.

PJ, I had a 1990, same engine. Good truck. No real problems. Be sure to use a Supplamental Coolant Additive. These engines have been known to have cylinder erosion from cavitation if not maintained with CSA even though they are a non sleeved engine.
Mine had 3.54 gearing and I could get almost 20 mpg. Never could quite break that mark. I had the E40D tranny. About 15 towing.
I have a friend with the 6.9 and 5 speed who gets 20 if he stays out of it.
These engines are not a strong as the 'powerstroke' but they do well.

Raytasch's last sentence sums it up well. You see a lot of "my Powerstroke could eat your Cummins for lunch" talk on these boards, but lets put things in perspective- Sure, they're cool trucks, but 40 grand is a lot of money, too- and millions of miles have been logged on the older Ford diesels, and many more will be. Treat 'em right, and they'll do you a great job, for a lot less bucks- maybe just not at 75 MPH loaded...
