Just read an article in Farm Forum, our local weekly ag paper, about a farm in our area with a 4450 with 48,000 hours. The local dealer had a celebration for the 82 year old farmer and sons who have a 900 cow/calf operation. he bought the tractor new in 85 and it does not say whats all been done to it but they have a picture of it and still looks good and still feeds cows everyday, just seemed like an interesting story thought i would let you know.

I just stated what the article said, the guy bought the tractor from the same dealer who did maintenance on it so there is no reason to doubt it is legit, they have other tractors of course, but the old guy always prefered this one from new so it is the one he always ran, and averaging 40 hours a week on an electric tach is not out of line considering they run 900 cows and 12,000 acres of crop and hay land. There are several 40 series john deeres around the area that have 12,000 hours and have not been opened up, but they also are on light duty jobs at this point in the game. Like i said befor just thought it was an interesting story, it was more about the old guy than the tractor itself so they didn't go into a lot of detail.

I drove for a contractor in the uk for 10 years using JD, NH , MF all bought new and running 5-8 tractors at a time 1500-2000 per year was easily possible on most but not all of them .
Some of them made it past the 10,000 hour mark the highest i recall was MF 698T did 16,800 but as a general rule once they passed 7-8000 the repairs got out of hand .

Between 1972 and 1983, when dad and I were still feeding cattle, we put around 14,000 hours total between 2 John Deere 4320 tractors, plus whatever we put on the 3020 and the 3010 loader tractor. We used at least one tractor every day of the year. Amazing how fast hours can accumulate. Back then we still plowed which added a lot of hours. Plus discing, field cultivating, planting, row crop cultivating, spraying, sidedressing nitrogen, hauling grain, augering grain, picking at least some corn, cutting hay, raking and baling hay and straw, pulling racks, running bale elevator, hauling silage wagons, running the blower, feeding hay, feeding silage with the chuckwagon, scraping, loading and spreading manure, clipping pastures, plowing snow, grading lanes, etc. Now, one tillage pass on corn in the fall, level and incorporate in the spring, plant corn and no-till beans, and put the tractor away. Hire spraying done, nitrogen goes on with the chemicals.Haul grain to the elevator in trucks. No livestock. Snowplow on the pickup. Spend rest of time restoring tractors.

That equals about 2182 hours per year, or close to 6 hours per day, every day since new!

They must be busy with a tractor running that much!

It would have to have at least 3 engine overhauls, 2 transmission overhauls, front and rear axle bearings, new tie rod ends, 1,000 oil changes in everything over the years, 4 sets of tires, 2 rebuilt hydraulic pumps, rebuilt SCV's, 2 sets of brakes, a paint job or two, a new operator's seat, new muffler, tons of filters, and a whole lot more.

I figured this out as closely as I could, and although it is possible that it could have been used for 48,000 hours, you would have to take the steering wheel off and drive a WHOLE NEW TRACTOR under the steering wheel. (I bet the steering wheel would have to be replaced with that many hours!!)

At 8,000 hours on a 4320 we used to joke about jacking up the radiator cap and sliding a new tractor underneath. Seriously, though, at 8000 the only major repair was a clutch replacement, and one could consider that a normal wear item.

I fully agree , my reply was just what i found to be true , My own tractors are a different story but they are older and in my opinion better .
Ford TW20 9900 hrs
Versatile 895 8000 hrs
CAT D7e 21'000 hrs
Ford 7600 8000 + hrs
versatile 876 7000 hrs
JD 2130 8000+ clock stopped 4 years ago Steiger bearcat 5000 on a 3208 CAT ?

The only one of these to have major work was obviously a new head on the 3208 and a head on the dozer but thats CAT?.

Generally tractors today are not the same with all the powershift and vario transmissions and vhp engines and electronics , With most of the unreliability i was thinking of being electrical , Hydraulic ,Transmissions (MF) , Brakes and most commonly FWA axles .
