I am looking at a Farmall 560-Gas
Did all 560's have torque amplifier, or was that an option? How do you check for proper operation? Any other things to check for on this tractor before buying?

Kenn,

In the Mississippi Delta, probably as many if not more were sold without TA than with TA.

TA's were options on all tractors that had them available, but far more had them than not. A properly working TA will shift on the fly smoothly from direct into TA (and back) without any noise, etc. In TA you shouldn't hear extra gear noise or release bearing growl. The TA will shift into low when the clutch is depressed to aid in shifting, but engage just prior to main clutch to prolong TA clutch life & prevent "2-staging". This is an external adjustment. All mechanical TA's (as in the 560) will freewheel forward while in TA, and you cant bar the motor over backwards in direct drive with a sound TA unit. Hope this helps.

While driving the 560 take your left hand and pull the TA lever to the back position and the tractor will coast down in speed. [Without a load] Then move the TA lever to the front detent andyou will feel the tractor pick up speed.[ Do this slowly] Most 560's had the TA. We have had several on our farm over the years with little trouble. The gassers can use a lot of gas when pulling heavy loads. They will cut back some on lighter loads. The brakes can give some trouble but are easily repaired
