How much acerage do you have? i say if you have 4 or 5 acres, split it all up just in case we have a dry summer again. my dad does that with all his pasture, when the pasture is chewed down he closes that one off and opens another. he never runs outta pasture and never has to feed a single bale of hay during the summer. i do the same with my heifers and milkers and only feed like 3 round bales in a summer
my 2 cents

IF you are going to give them grain to fatten also I would think you could easily run 8 head of feeder cattle on that I live in NE Missouri And run 1 cow/calf pair to 1.5 acres and get by until usually about October A lot of this depends on management style soil condition and weather if I get a drought like we had last year I gotta move sooner I put a lot of manure on the pasture and then some commercial nitrogen and I rotate between paddocks give the grass a little chance to catch up.

In SE Wyoming 20 acres will keep 2 horses about 3 months with a little supplemental hay thrown in.

Do goats prefer weeds to grasses?

On GOOD native grass in Kansas we can put a cow calf pair on about 4 to 4.5 acres.

Here in the Willamette Valley I have two steers on four acres. They can't keep up with it. I'll need to mow/chop it in the fall.

If you could give us your general location mabe someone close to your area will reply. Location has a lot to do with amount and type of grasses. Brian

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the reply. I'm in the mountains of central Pennsysvania. Have 20 acres of pasture that I'm not using and would like to raise out some feeder beef. Pasture has timothy, red & white clover, fescue, and some brome grass and some weeds. Plan on putting a few goats in to help with the weeds.
Have a Nice Day,
Joe Roberts

coup,
Thanks for the reply. Have a 20 acre field that I used to take hay off of. Want to put in some beef feeders. I'm in the mountains of central Pennsysvania where the rain hasn't been normal but I think adequate. Will put some Herfords and a few of my neighbors beefalo in it. A few goats for weed control.
Regards,
Joe Roberts
