Why do the tractor manufactors use a 1000 rpm shaft on larger tractors and a 540 rpm on smaller tractors? What is the significance of the splines?
21 splines on 1000 rpm
6 splines on a 540

Clay, The reason for high horsepower w/ 1000rpm shafts is: {this is very unsientific} The higher the rpm, the more power that can be transmitted. Ask the physical sience teacher at your local high school why.

First question: Why speed differential between 540 and 1000 rpm pto? Power delivered is a function of both the torque and the rotational speed of the shaft. This is the main reason why engine rpm's of modern tractors are greater than those of the 40's and 50's. (The increased speed awaited better manufacturing and balancing techniques.)
Second question: Spline size. The surface area presented at the active surfaces of the driving and driven shafts was increased on the 1000 rpm shafts by increasing the number of splines. Thus the pressure (and wear and tear) between the surfaces (for a given amount of torque) was decreased.

Another reason for the different spline arrangement could be to keep someone from running 540 attachments at 1000 RPMs.

Bill: That's a very good point.

When turning at a higher speed the torque is cut down, I was told once when u put all that torque of a large horsepower tractor out on a 540 shaft it would twist the shafts off. But when u double the speed with the same amount of power u cut the torque in half.
