Got a set of 28" tractor rims here that I had blasted and I primed them. I put on a couple of coats of aluminum paint (that all small Cases seem to have on their rear rims) and was wondering, how well does the Aluminum paint seem to stand up over time. It sure covers well and seems hard as nails, however it just doesn't seem to have the surface shine or quality that an enamel paint has. How good is Aluminum paint? Should a guy put a clear coat of some type over it after painting?

Dear sirs:I have been practicing autobody for forty three years now;And there has bin a real improvement on primers.I am not going to name one brand because they are all pretty much the same compound. What i am referring to is the new etching primers that are made to etch into the metal and even into a rusty surface when lose scale is removed and grease. What you must remember is to properly mix the the thinner tothe primer, because the thinner has the etch agent in it,Phosphoric acid, which etches intothe surface.

I used alluminum paint on all four rims of my 44 farmall A. It looks and holds up great for about two years. Unfortunatley it fades after that point and then touch ups become a nightmare. I've had some scratches placed on mine since it is still in use on the farm and when I decided to do the touch ups this summer I found out what a difference a few years worth of wear can make. Go ahead and use the alluminum but get ready for some fading. I'd still use it cause I can get the stuff from wal-mart for .94 rather than $6.00.

My Dad always swore by aluminum paint as the best undercoat you could use. I painted an old tiller 20 years ago and stopped all the rust and it still looks OK. As for a good finish, it is difficult to make perfect, but it sure holds up well.

it all depends on what the tractor is used for.if you are going to show it,sure, clearcoat over the aluminum paint.i used aluminum paint on my tractors rims because it is rust resistant and easy to touch up when scratched & you can't really tell where scratches were when touched up.
