I've been thinking about getting a new lawn mower currently I have a Craftsman powered by a 20hp Briggs and has a 42 inch deck i was looking for something a little bigger like 26hp Briggs with a 54 inch deck, any suggestions on tractor brands Thanks in advance Ryne

JD you are just paying the extra cost for the NAME!!!! I have a craftsman for 25yrs and all I have replaced are belts tires battries and a seat and I have 7 acers and it gets mowed 7-8 months out of the year !!! And I have seen my friends buy 2 JD to my one.Change the oil and take care of it and it will last a long time.

Just got a used Land Pride "All Flex 4011" cuts 11'4" pull it with my 6206 Deutz saves lots of mowing time.

Take a look at the Cub Cadet 2500 series. Price is good and they come pretty well built.

I have been trying to decide between them and the Deere but the Cub is quite a bit cheaper. Shaft drive too.

Been mowing 5 acres with a Craftsman for 10 yrs.
Spayer mounted on back. Kohler motor. No repairs. one new belt, set of blades, Rear tires. Paid $900 for it. Can't beat it-
get a cast iron front end and grease it.

Per dollar now, long term operating costs and trade value in 10-20 years. Right now the Deere LA140 is tough to beat. Craftsman, Sears, MTD etc only bring scrap metal price on a trade in a few years. Liquid cooled twin, hydrostatic with cruise, comfy seat,up sized large floatation/smooth riding tires, electric pto clutch, front bumper incluided, bright head lights, a heavier transmision than the LA110 & LA120,and full dealer support for parts and service. Where do you take brand X for parts & service? Deere even has the parts book online at their site. For those who don't think a front bumper is required. Have a look at every lawn & garden tractor you see. It's a safer bet that the hood/grill is crumpled than not.

If it doesn't have to be new new, I'd say go for a JD 425, 445, or 455. We've got a 425 (20 HP Kawasaki liquid cooled engine) with a 60" deck, and it runs that big deck pretty good. It's a little too big for our front yard, but cutting behind the barn is a quick job with it.

They had some models with 4 wheel steer. They're hydrastatic drives with hydraulic levers to raise the deck and other attatchments. Can be fitted with a 3 pt. for rear attatchments, as well as a snowblower on the front, blade, small loader, etc...

Probably one of the better models JD ever put out for a lawn & garden tractor.

I still think that sears has the best deals. They make the 26 hp in several configurations with some decent size tires. I would love to have a new GT6500 with only a 46 inch mower (need to get thru gate) and painted red to match the big ones. I currently have a 6 year old with the B&S 21 HP and I use it every day to take my dogs for a walk. It gets about 400 miles a year and ther only problem I have had is when I try to use it as a bush hog and tear up the pulley and belts also mower spindles.

They are all pretty much the same some are built a little heavier but the most important thing is support as they all break down sooner or later.

With Craftsman Sears will come to your house to repair it at no extra cost. They put over $3000 into my 5 year old tractor that cost new $1200 its hard to beat that.

When asking for price and other things ask about on site service.

JD dealer near me makes house calls on lawn equipment. I have an '83 JD 314 that's never been to to dealer nor even had the points or sparkplug changed. All it's needed is belts,blades and oil changed. Tx Jim
