John Deer problem

The tractor will not go forward unless the differential is put in locked position. Applying the right break will not stop the forward motion of that wheel. Seems like an axle is busted to me, here is what happened.
My brother in law was bush hogging when he ran into a stump about 18 inches high, it cleared the front end and jammed the break lever in. The more the tractor pushed forward the harder the cylinder was jammed. When he discovered what had happened he had to get a chain saw and cut the stump off even so he could drive away. The tractor wouldn't move even witht he breaks off. He locked the differential and it got forward motion. What do you guys think might have happened?

:I don't know how big of a tractor you have but the fix is about the same just a little more work for some tractors. I have worked on many with this problem. First check the wedges that hold the hub to the axle, they tend to break the key on the hub off, then the axle just spins inside the hub. Try going forward and watch the axle to see if it turns and the doesn't. If that is OK the problem is inside. Sometimes the gears and stub shafts in the final drive break, but they usually lock up the broke side. I would guess that it broke a spider gears or the pin in the differential. You can drain the hydraulic oil and check for metal (like teeth off the gears.) Or you can remove the rock shaft and look down at the differential. If you need any help or more ideas e-mail me. : If this is a Dubuque Built John Deere utility tractor, it sounds like it may have broken the pinion shaft between the differetial and the final drive, If that isn't your problem it probably lies within the differintial itself. To determine which axel to remove, jack up and block both rear wheels off the ground, run tractor with differential lock engaged and see which axel doesn't turn and that is the one in which will reveal your prolem when you remove it.
