I am looking at buying this truck for towing. It is a 1999 with 95,000 miles, a reciever and fifth wheel. It also has a vee plow all for 10,000.00.

6.5 diesel and Automatic.

I will use less than 5,000 miles per year.

Is this a pile of trouble or is it a reasonable choice?

I have not owned a diesel truck and have payed little attention to all the bickering over Ford, Chevy, Dodge.

Any thoughts would be welcome.

Mine Has 195,000 miles without problems. it vtows a resonable load very well. If you tow a very Heavy wieght yuo need to back out of the throttle before the Temp reaches red line. I ran a vehicle section in the air force. we had quite a few 95 to 200 6.5's never had a problem with any of them. The lagrest grip was they won't start if you don't wait for the glow plug light to go out. Most of the time they ran 24 hours a day 5 days a week then 12 hours a day on weekends. with lots of differant drivers.

I've had a couple 6.5's and had fairly good luck. That being said, there is a mile long list of people that haven't had such good luck. My personal belief is that the longevity mostly depends on the nut thats loose behind the steering wheel. If you got a heavy foot and arent willing to back out of the throttle when needed going up a hill, stay away from it, you'll have troubles. I pull a 31' 5th wheel camper and a 25' gooseneck and it handles both well.

Comes with a vee-plow. That's enough right there to turn me away. Those snow plows will take a toll on any power train.

They aren't noted for their towing ability, especially if there are hills involved in the equation. The engines are detuned so they will last out of the warranty period, and also to keep them cool. There isn't enough airflow through the fronts of the chev/gm trucks. You can change fans/thermostats,and a few other cooling upgrades, then add a chip to increase the power.Time you are all said and done you will have the price of a dodge cummins or powerstroke tied up in it.

The 6.5"s can be great motors but there were alot of melons in the bunch. My aunt has a "98 with the 6.5 turbo and 5-speed manual with 90,000 miles. Has been in the shop more than out over the last few years. Got it back from the shop two weeks ago drove it 60 miles and it dropped a valve. Hopefully the new crate engine will do better! Just be sure to check it out good and try and get some history on it first...

Thank-you all for your information. It was all helpful. If the truck checks out allright and he will reduce his price into the eight to nine range I will take a chance on the truck.
