I want to put this out for anyone to respond, I have determined the correct hitch height is about 17" from the ground for a good hitch height for a car or Pu hitch. Is there really an accepted standard for this height??. Also some people extend their hitches farther back from the vehicle thinking farther back means less stress on the vehicle , they must have missed geometry class. What is everyone's feeling on this subject.

Set trailer level. Then measure to top of ball recever Then set Top of Ball 1" above that On my Camper that is 15 1/2" so top of ball is 15 1/2"
had to use a 6" drop hitch to make work on truck . That is what Reese Recomemends . But a Trailer will pull better if it sets level and towing Vehicle is level also . Even if it's a small 4"X8" utility trailer .

I have been installing hitches for close to 30 yrs. 17 to 18 in. from the ground to the top of the ball is a pretty good measurement. If you are using a equalizer set-up like a Reese you are better off a little low than too high, You can always use the equalizer bars to pick up the tongue a little. If you get too high it puts too much weight on the rear axle on a tandum trailer and they do not pull good. Seems most pintle hitch trailers are around 24ins. There are exceptions to this depending on the trailer manufacturer. Set your trailer on level ground and level the trailer, measure from the ground to the top of the coupler, The is where the loaded trailer should run. Tongue height depends on how you load the trailer, tongue weight of the trailer and the suspension of the tow vehicle, and if you are using an equalizer hitch.
