How would one get a cdl on a one ton (or pick up) amd small trailer? Yes a road tractor and wheeler straight job I can see. But air brakes and all the endoresments double trailers etc, the weight, length etc. What would you take a test in? I understand you must pass a written test. But i am refering to a road test. What good would it be on a one ton no one would let you drive a triaxel with air breaks a 600hp cat and 15 speed.

Well with a CDL theres a number of classes and also other things to go with the classes. You need to drive the truck you will be driveing and then if its say a class C type that what you can get but if a class A then thats what you can get. Also laws from state to state are different so depends on the state. My self I carry a class A CDL and will not let it go but I also don't need it any more.

Your Local DMV office should have a manual about 1/2 inch thick that covers all the classes and if you can get by with a class B Study just for that B endorsement.

Some towing companies have second party testers in there Employ, that can tell you what you need to drive at test time for the class B.

There is more than one class of CDL,you are going to need a truck-trailer combo of 5 axles for a class A and weights of 80,000#. But we have guys that are driving 3 axles, air brakes and haz mat with a class B.

To get a CDL you will need..... ...
To pay $15 as a application fee
Take a one time road test in a truck that meets the highest class of license you want. Cost is $60
Take the test and pass with 80% or better for your class of license. Standard CDL test and a combination vehicle test.
Stand still while they take you picture and give them $45 for the license.

Taking the air brake test; doubles test; having your finger prints taken; ect; ect; is all for endorsements you do not need.
The sweet thing about the road test is you can take it in any vehicle that meets the requirement. If your 1 ton and goose neck trailer needs a driver with a CDL to be legal it is a legal road test vehicle. You would not be able to use your 1 ton and get a air brake endorsement but it will be fine if that’s all you drive.

Prices are what my state charges. Yours may vary.

One more thing no one has mentioned, is the Medical Card, physical is near a hundred bucks around here and if you don't have the long form, DMV won't even talk to you about road test.I don't know if all states are the same.

Forgot to add..... .....
If you want a CDL and do not have your own truck to drive you will need to rent one from the place that gives the test and pay extra over and beyond the $60 test fee.
Problem is they will only have large trucks with air brakes to rent.

I know in KS you take the one ton and trailer for your test. Just make sure everything is in tip top shape to pass the inspection. You just take the written test for the CDL alone. You don't need any of the endorsements just to drive a 1 ton and trailer if you are going to haul tractors or such. Bob
