This forum is for talking about issues related to transporting your tractor. That includes your hauling equipment and your tie down methods and tips to haul smarter. See the first post on the forum (only on classic view) for the complete welcome message. It didn't make it to the modern view because we were testing.

Thanks,

Chris

[quote="cbp"](quoted from post at 12:25:07 08/28/07) I hope so, but sometimes I wish I was an engineer ;-).
If an engineer built it, it would still need to be modified to make it adaptable to your purposes.

Chris, I hope this helps people with a lot of question/problems they run into. I know on Sunday I will be doing one that will tax all my skills and knowelge as to how to load a dead tractor.

Hey Rich

I know how that goes. I'm in the middle of getting our new 1990 F-350 ready to do it's duty and pull anything on the trailer dead, alive or dragging. Finally upgraded from my old 1980 C-30. Right now I'm putting a winch mount up above the receiver so loading (especially when they are dead) won't be too tough.
When I'm not staring at this screen, I've spent all my time lately staring at that assembly just to make sure I've got enough bolts in the right places to make sure winch, bumper, receiver and all stay put. Right now have it tied together with 8 grade 8 half inch bolts in the frame of the truck and am adding 2 three quarter bolts to the winch mount which also ties to the receiver and bumper (a piece of 8 inch x one quarter channel iron). Hate to drill more holes in the frame or it will look like swiss cheese.
Being able to ask opinions about things like that is why this forum seemed like a good idea.

The tractor I'm hauling in on Sunday is an 8N ford with front end loader and part of a back hoe on it. If has sat where it is for 30 plus years. Tires are flat, loader is on the ground as is what is left of the hoe. The hoe is no problem since I can lift it up by hand did it the day I looked at it. The problem is the front end loader since it has no frame to hook on to to lift the bucket up and its parked on a hill and I have no idea if the brakes work or not or if the eninge is locked up. I have 2 winches on my tractor so pulling one on is no problem plus I have a compressor under the hood so I can air up tiures this time its a matter of if it starts to roll can I stop it before it hits the front of the trailer

Rich, bring some 4X4s along, or a few chunks of firewood. Place those blocks so that the 8n can't go very far. You can always kick the blocks ahead a bit to let the tractor roll just a bit further.

Good idea, sounds easier then what I was going to try to do. I figured I could hook a chain or com-a-long to a tree so it could only go so far and with a com-a-long I could jsut let out some cable to let it go slowly forward but that would also be a lot of owrk the blocks might be a simple fix

CBP, sounds like maybe you have overbuilt it. That is the same way I do most of my fabrication jobs. If something is gonna break, it won't be anything that I built.

WHEN IN DOUBT, BUILD IT STOUT.

Rich, the easiest and safest way to load anything that will not move under its own power is to either winch the dead iron onto your trailer, or find a machine that will completely pick that dead iron up and gently set it down on your trailer. I know that is not always an option, so whatever you do, think it through, and be safe.

For what it"s worth, an inexpensive 12 volt electric winch rated at just 2,500 pounds WILL pull an H Farmall up the ramps and onto a flatbed deckover gooseneck. The trick is to have more battery than you think you need.

That's basically what I was talking about. Have the backhoe here (AC 816) which can unload most anything, but when you go get a machine elsewhere, it's awful nice to have a winch at the head of the trailer. We have an old 9000lb Warn which I'm putting between the frame members of the truck. That sits just high enough to do a single line pull on the load up on to the trailer.
On my old trailer I had the winch mount on the trailer itself on a tower of 3 x one half bar stock with receiver up toward the front. The winch was on a receiver mount. The only problem was I was always having to pull it off and put it on the truck for other jobs (like snaking logs out of heavy woods), that's hard on the back just moving the winch. This arrangement should do both jobs. Having the mount permanently on the trailer also got in the way if you were loading a long machine with a loader and needed those 2 extra feet of trailer space.

Rusty see the post I made to the other guy to help explain my problem with this one. I have 2 winchs on my truck so thats never a problem this time it will be a stopping problem because this tractors on a hill. Plus 4 flats and a loader and back hoe

Rich, just take some of that moldy old money you have buried in the backyard and go get one of those fancy roll back jobs with a winch already on it. Problem solved. (: LOL

Wish I had some buried in the back yard but I don't. Shoot now days I'm lucky to be able to buy a tractor. Oh well I got this one priced right so I had to jump on it. Plus the guy selling it knows if I get it the tractor will not end up being cut up for scrap iron. He turned down 2 or 3 other people because they where going to haul it off for scrap and he told me at least if you get it I know you will l do something with it other then scrap it out
