This may be a long one. I am going to buy an AC road grader. I was mulling over an idea of driving it home. About 1550 miles and only four states (9 miles of interstate) I think it would be a memorable excursion. All you DOT types and other lawmen are free to jump in and render your 2pennies. Have FUN

I don't think you can take it on the interstate. It looks like you already know the numbers. sounds like fun, I would do it.

In April 2006 I drove a 6030 JD tractor 240 miles home from Lindsborg,KS.Here I am in the cab of the 6030 looking at nothing but open road in the Kansas Flint Hills.I got over 5 mpg and the tire wear wasnt even noticeable. It was lots cheaper than hiring it hauled.

In April 2004 I drove a G-1000 Vista MM tractor 300 miles home from Minneaplis,KS.I got a little over 5 mpg. Both tractors were in good shape and the only problem was a flat front tire.I had spares with me.

It was the most fun I've ever had and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. We went mostly blacktop and gravel roads and I had an escort behind me.

1550 miles in a grader would be quite an adventure.

I personally looked at doing something like this back in March. I had about the same amount of miles to deal with. I found a local carrier with a semi and a flatbed. His comment was that 2 bucks a loaded mile was robbery. He charged me less than a dollar a mile as long as I was willing to allow him time to schedule as a backhaul. What would have cost me 3,000 by a seller of a 140 horse tractor, actually cost me 1,000.
The wear and tear would have been costly. Tires alone are worth the hauling cost. Fuel and time will cost more than you probably want to deal with.
As far as the legal aspect, there is a minimum speed on most major highways, and the equipment is not owned by the state within a construction zone. Depending on your state, you might find its not worth the drive from a legal aspect.

I don't know if you are allow to or not, but I would be leery of taking a new to me used hunk of iron and traveling 1550 miles . Check out the mechanicals real real close first and have all the fluids changed before you go!

Have you determined the fuel cost to get it home? Plus hotel/food for you? Wear on the tires? Them big boys are spendy.

I am guessing that you will get 5 mpg with a rig like that, which translates into 310 gal of diesel. Or about $1000. If you are able to average 40 mph that trip would be about 40 hours. 3 or 4 long days in the seat. Figure on your food and sleeping costs.
Probably still cheaper than having it hauled.

In many states, construction equipment with a SMV sign gets a pass. May be doable..... ?
