I was crawling under my trailer today and noticed one of the axles was bowed slightly. I'm thinking about replacing it as it doesn't seem to be a very difficult job. I've got a 16 foot flatbed rated at 5000 lbs double axle, no brakes.

In looking at axles on the internet I see 2000, 2200, and 3500 lb axles. I'm guessing I'll need the 3500 lb in order to make the trailer good for 5000 lbs. They come with brakes so it means my front axle will be different than my rear.

Is this going to be a problem and how common is it for an axle to be slightly bowed and how serious is that? Thanks

Dave,

The rated capacity of the trailer, 5000# for you, includes the weight of the trailer. It's not the amount you can pile on it.

Your trailer is probably 1200-1500#, so it can only hold 3500-3800#.

You can get 3500# axles and the stiffness won't change as long as you use the current springs. If you want to be able to load 5000#, you will have to go to both 3500 axles with brakes. Then visit the state patrol or maybe DMV to get the trailer certified for 7000# and buy the correct plates.

All trailer axles are bowed up in center this is normal But in the state of Texas you are required to have brakes if over 4500 lb .

The trailer's front axle is bowed down - thats what has me concerned. I'm going to replace the axle with one that already has brakes installed and was looking at the 3500 lb axle. Was wondering if this would be too stiff. But the next lower size is 2200 but that wouldn't support 5000 lbs.

I never overloaded the trailer - all I've ever hauled is an 8N and 5 foot shredder.

Like marlowe; I would want to know more about this bow before replacing.

If it is bowed bad how did it get this way. Did you over load it???

A 3500 lb axle may or may not work; and I can not really answer if it would. I would be worried that with stiffer springs it would carry more weight than the other; but then again it is made to.
You might be better finding a direct replacment; a 2500 lb axle.

It doesn't matter if the axles look alike as long as they are the correct axle. Adding the brakes will be good, you'll like them.
