Dave,
I went to the BMV in Connersville In. and asked the folks working behind the counter about changing the title on the semi trailer I bought to make into a big toy hauler. Told them I had heard it was possible to have the title changed from semi trailer to RV if I installed a living quarters in the trailer. Lady said yes, "no problem" here is the form to have the State Police come out and do the inspection and verify the vin numbers. I told her I wasn't done yet with the living quarters and she said "no problem, they don't have to be self sustaining to be an RV now"...."a school bus can qualify without the bathroom now so can your trailer."
Now my question, I'll have an RV trailer hooked to my single axel Ford daycab semi tractor, if I get stopped by the DOT for inspection, all they can look at is the tractor and not the trailer if the trailer is now an RV it is the same as invisible behind the tractor for DOT purposes correct? I talked to three differant tractor pullers (all NTPA big boys) and all of them are running RV plates on their trailers and say they are completly legal?

Your take on this info?

Thanks, David S.

DOT will look at the combined weight of the unit regardless what its plated as if its a vehicle of husbandry.

You should be fine in your plating request. You will need a commissioned officer to complete a VIN inspection if your in Indiana (andmaybe other states). The only issue that you may have is IF you run into someone while you are doing other than RV'ing. Again, the guys pulling lawn mowers around here have typical plates, and they are getting the hint that it doesn't make a difference of the type of plate, its what you are doing with it. You should contact the motor carrier division of your state police, not the people plating vehicles. Those people don't make the traffic stops.

Lots of pullers in MO run RV plates.
