Craig, you'd need to check with the state of Wisconsin. It may depend on your age. If you are getting your license at 16 many states have restrictions on what you can drive or pull. Ask your driving instructor.

If you look at the tag in the door and it is less than the 26001 then no CDL now if you put a trailer on then check the GVWR of the trailer and the unit pulling it if the combined GVWR is the 26001 or over then yes CDL. Then log booksnot pads of paper with times on WILL NOT DUE must be in a "offical " log book" to be legal or some such time recording devise.

You can drive any unit that has a gross weight rating of 26,000 lbs or less with your car licence. This weight would be a 1 ton with a trailer or less. Anything bigger than a 1 ton needs to be looked at in a case by case basies to see what the weight rating is.

If you want to drive anything bigger you would need a CDL and must be 18 to get it and it is limited to your state only.

To get a CDL that can be used to cross state lines you need to be 21.
