With me living two miles from the Indiana line,and nine miles from the Michigan line, it seems from the rumor mills that we have to operate under more than one set of rules. It has been my understanding up until the last two years that my pickup and trailer with a gross combination weight tags was legal out of state as long as I was hauling my tractors and machinery as a collector as well as going to shows and tractor pulls. I also thought I was legal using my truck and trailer hauling lumber and fence from Angola Indiana to Edon Ohio to use at my home. That is without DOT numbers or a CDL.
I have been told that I need a CDL to cross the state lines because it is over the 10,000 pounds even using the trailer for above use.
I do have a DOT number on my big truck and just renewed it but was sent a State of Ohio form to pay a fee and register any truck that will carry a DOT number. I called the information number and the lady I talked to was clear as mud. I would like to know if I really need the CDL or the DOT for my ton pickup.

You will need a DOT number with you crossing the state lines. "Intrastate vehicles used exclusively for private farm operations are exempt from obtaining a US DOT number, however, if you DO cross the state line (interstate) you are required to obtain and display a US DOT number."

I have been told that I need a CDL to cross the state lines because it is over the 10,000 pounds even using the trailer for above use.

CDL = No.

would like to know if I really need the CDL or the DOT for my ton pickup.

For the 1 ton = yes if its pulling a trailer. You will be over the weight of 10,000.
Also if you need further make contact with Dee at the Fort Wayne State Police Post. She is a master motor carrier officer and instructor. 260-432-8661.

If your in Angola, look me up. I'll be on Sat night (Steuben County) from 9 pm til 4 am. I'll be happy meet you and give you copies of the handouts provided which explains statutes and commonly asked questions with phone numbers.

Thanks. I eat supper in Angola tonight. I will probably will not leave home until Sunday. I will check to see when I might chat with you some time next week. And where you might be and when might be handy. I live three miles South of Edon where all the tractors are in the yard on the West side of the road, if you get this way stop in.
