I don't weld often. I use a OLD Miller Thunderbolt A/C Stick welder. ***I weld in a Shop with very little or no sunlight.

I want to get a Auto Darkening hood.

***Will just Solar Powered work in that envirounment or do I need to get a Solar with Battery back up? Does the Solar actually run the Darkening feature so when you get ark it will function? and in low light areas a Battery type works better?

I don't really want to spend a lot of Money.
I see Northern tool has one for 49 dollars that is solar powered only.

I have used a battery back up, and the regular styled helmet. Unless you are doing real finicky welding, or a lot of tack welding the auto darkening helmet works great, if you don't have to replace the battery when you are going to weld. On the regular type helmet, I tip the helmet up, when I'm ready to start my arc, I give a quick nod, helmet tips down over my face, and I'm welding. When I'm done my arc, I do it all over again. I find that the auto darkening helmets don't shade as much as the regular helmet. I do lots of wedding, and I prefer the regular style helmet over the auto darkening helmet.
My opinion any way.
Bruce.

I spent the bucks and got the Miller Elite with the wide window (and battery power). It has helped me weld better I must say. Also installed a 1.25 mag lense on the inside which helps also, and I don't wear glasses.

the ark will trigger the auto dark with a solar power. Also a bright light will trigger it also. i have a clamp on light on my bench so i can see better but it triggers my welding helmet if i have it aimed at my work.

I just got one from Northern about a month ago. One step up to the (I think $69.00 one). I like it and ask myself why I didn't get one sooner - it's great. Not sure about the solar one I wanted the battery backup.
