10,000 and above has to stop in the scales, anything over 26000 requires appropriate cdl so his 3/4 ton truck tagged at 10,000, pulling a 14,000 gvw trailer and a 7000# tractor, gross combined gvw is 31,000. Requires cdl, dot#,electronic log, fire extinguishers, triangles. And if he gets pulled in, probably a fine for not having a combination weight on the truck to cover truck, trailer and load

MSM -Are you sure about all that? Triangles & fire extinguisher are required in all trucks in some states. The nonsense about 10,000# capacity truck towing a 14,000# capacity trailer, plus a 7000# tractor scales out at 31,000 is just wrong. Math is right, but truck probably weighs 7000#, trailer maybe 4000#, add 7000# tractor you should scale 18,000, so NO CDL, electronic logs, etc.

Combined GVWR is rating of truck added to weight rating of trailer. Weight of tractor is NOT part of that equation. A 10k rating truck and a 14k rating trailer is a total of 24,000 lbs. Empty or tare weight is likely around 12,000. Allowing a "payload " of 12,000# before exceeding vehicles weight rating. Federal cdl standards are over 26,000 combined gvwr. Some states do have regulations that affect some vehicles and drivers exempt by federal cdl regulations. Those are STATE regulations. States have no legal authority to alter or modify the cdl standards. All states are required to use federal standards in all cdl licenses they issue.

Thank you mmfan 55. 10000 plus 14000= 24000Gross vehicle weight. Or GVW.
