I buy alot of scrap metal and in a recent deal I was offered a 1 ton dualy, 1992 model with blown head gaskets on the 454

The heads are off and there is very light surface rust on the cyl walls. Looks like it would hone out fine. I can buy it for within a hundred or so of scrap price, My thoughts are I may repair it and run it again.

Were these trucks any good to begin with? I am a superduty fan and love my diesel, but I am thinking I may be as well off with a 454 gas to reduce the inital 1.00 diffrence in fuel price.
The truck is in much better shape than I would usually scrap. It is a manual tranny.

If you are salvage work, is your current rig a 3/4 ton or 1 ton? If you don't already have one, you need a DOT number any over 10K. If 26K or more combo, that will put you in to full CDL needed. 1 ton will put you over 26K a lot faster. DOUG

I ended up passing on it, there were title problems that made me shy even for scrap. Somebody died and the title was not transferd, then the POA died and everything went to the goverment,,, Just got messy and I didn't want to take that big of a chance.
As for the cdl, I am running a 3/4 ton(8500lb) truck and a 14000GVW trailer. It was always my impression if you are hauling under the 26k ne cdl was required. Am I wrong? I have never weighed in total weight over 23000 lbs. That was with a combine on.

From my understanding of the law, you are correct, don't need a CDL. You might get by without a DOT number quite a while, but you should get one as less hassles than an over assertive law officer might give you. DOUG

Not sure what scrap price would be on that truck but I'd look for a good motor at a salvage yard and just swap er in. Replace hoses and radiator and be done with it.

I haul a lot of scrap, too. It would definitely be worth the money. I use a 350, and I wouldn't need anything any bigger. Consider swapping in a good running 350. I think the bell housing patterns are the same.

I own a 92 1 ton 454 and consider it to be the worst pickup I have owned. The 454 in that year tends to run hot, cooling system is a bit small, so be suspicious about the engine having been seriously overheated. The 454 is not normally known for head gasket problems.
The steering is numb and heavy steering compared to 87 and earlier or 98 and newer.
If 4wd, the turning circle is much larger than earlier solid front axle models.

Lots of little electrical and mechanical troubles due to poor design and cheaply made parts.
Mine will make 10 mpg on a trip at not over 60 mph. Short trips will net 7-8 mpg. Mine is 4wd single wheel with an automatic.
