Will advise what difference any of the attempts to improve my MPG have. I have a (used) Superchips tuner coming, VIN unlocked, a K&N intake kit coming, and Bosch platinum plus 4 plugs I bought locally tonight. The only other thing I am considering is oversize exhaust, but will come later. Anyhow, here is where I am at right now: 8-10 MPG with any of the trailers down the highway. Empty 14-16 MPG. Was making 16-17 MPG empty when I bought a couple years ago. Obvious fact: 3 or 4 MPG picking up small square bales, that will not change as too much time idling. But, will advise as to any changes. Have a 900 mile round trip in the next few days, hope all is here by then. The big test will be the first week in April, we are considering taking this on vacation up in the mountains of Wyoming and Montana IF I can get the MPG up around 17-20. Will advise as I know more. I'm pretty sure the 2001 2500's have true dual exhaust from the engine to the muffler, then a single tailpipe. I had a 2004 2500 with the 6.0, it had dual 3" pipes from the manifolds back, all the way through the muffler, then a y pipe after the muffler to a single 3 1/2" tailpipe. I changed the muffler/tailpipe to a flowmaster cat back, helped mileage a little, made a noticeable diff. in power too.

I don't mean to discourage you, but if any of the things you are proposing would really help, GM would have done it. GM can test this stuff much more scientifically than any consumer can out in the field. There are too many factors such as wind that make any field tests of mileage to inaccurate to make them reliable. Save your money on the aftermarket crap and just keep your tires inflated and your foot out of the throttle.

OK, so far I programmed it to 87 octane fuel. Went to St Louis and back basically empty, only picked up a 10x6x6 dog kennel kit there, no weight at all. 13.6 MPG, NO MPG change, but adjusted the shift points and pressures, it does shift in to 3rd quicker than before and just FEELS better. Filled up with 93 octane on the way home so could go to the trailer towing/performance settings, only drove it a couple miles after going to performance setting. It really reminds me of having a mild duration camshaft the way it sounds now. I think I am likely going backwards on MPG now, but will advise as soon as I know more. The K&N kit will be here tomorrow, but might hold off until I fill back up to keep it at more or less one thing at a time. DOUG

Well, I'll offer these suggestions. The exhaust may help, but you need to change it from your biggest restriction back. Normally on the GM trucks it's the ypipe if that truck has one. The K&N kit will help some. One of the things that I noticed when I was hotrodding my S10 pickup some years back was that replacing the clutch fan with a set of electric fans actually helped out not only my power but bought me 3-4 MPG. Now, THIS MIGHT NOT BE A VIABLE OPTION for you being it is a fullsize truck. I know the 94-02 Camaro electric fans push alot of air and those cars have a smaller radiator in em. Not sure if one would work and keep your truck cool or not. On the road the clutch fan isn't doing much, it's just when you sit at idle. Another thing you can try is getting a set of power pulleys for the truck. That might help some.

Doug,

Keep the air pressure in the tires at the max, take the brakes apart and grease the slides - they stick - (special grease from NAPA or GM dealer). Your at the age and in the climate where that may be an issue.

Exhaust needs to be a whole system. Change the exh manifolds to headers and a true dual exhaust with a cross over pipe 3/4 the diameter of the main pipe or larger. Very important to have that cross over pipe!

Only other thing is to dye your hair white, slouch down and only show 2 knuckles on the wheel and a few strands of white hair as you drive like an old lady. RPM's under 2000, 1750 is better still on the freeway. That's 55 mph land, so expect to be passed by granny with a walker.

John, what makes you think what little hair I still have left on top of my head isn't already getting white, especially with these fuel prices. I used to know all the MPG tricks back before computer controlled vehicles, had a 66 Chevy PU I put a 283 in, 327 truck heads and manifold with the bigger valves, longer duration cam, headers with turbo flow mufflers, carter 4bbl carb set so secondarys only opened when you needed them. 8 MPG or so pulling a 16 ft livestock trailer loaded, 14-16 MPG out on the highway. That was with STEEP detroit locker gearing, was ex army pickup. Was running higher compression pistons, think stock then was around 8.5 to 1, I was running around 9.5 to 1, was still able to use regular gas with timing set right. DOUG

Well, wind up your memory as the "driving trick" you learned back in '74-'75 when gas prices rocketed up to $0.56 a gallon still work today!

Highest tire pressure
lightest right foot pressure
maintain brakes so they don't drag
empty out extra "stuff" to lighten the load

etc etc etc.

Were we really that freaked out by the OPEC-ers back then?

Electric fans will work. Somewhere along that time frame GM switched to electric fans on full size trucks with gas engines. Dual exhaust, if you have emissions inspections in your area, can't do it. I'm pretty sure with the new generation engines they went back to 1 catalytic converter. They also have an oxygen sensor to monitor the cat, so if you only have 1 after cat sensor it may cause check engine light issues.
