I have a 2000 chevy 3500 HD with the vortec 454 and I have wrote on here before and have done some things to the truck and it is still Starting hard. This is what it is doing. When the motor is cold it starts up no problem. But when it is hot it is hard to start. You crank and crank and finally it will start and you smell a very rich running truck. I have replaced the fuel pressure regulator today, and the coolent temp sensor. I dont know what else to check. I appricate your help. Thanks

The 3800 fuel system is a completely different animal than what's on a big block. One of the things that any of the high priced scanners or tuners won't do is tell any problems within the system if there is no codes stored or active check engine light. Unless you actually have a diagnostic system you won't be able to tell. A stuck injector will give hesitation/jerky take off and will eventually foul the plug and give an ignition miss fire=(check engine light). When either the crank or cam shaft sensor breaks down, the sensor is still working but not sending the required amp signal to the computer-which makes the computer retard or advance the time to the amp signal its receiving-making the engine hard to start. Same as the throttle position sensor-when it goes bad the transmission shifts SUPER hard and will blow the tail shafts out on the 4L60E trannys if not corrected soon.

A stuck open fuel injector is VERY likely.Had one on a GM 3800 the other day.

A tech2 scanner or equiv. would tell you which cylinder is missing on misfire current or history.

Do you have fuel press guage?

I had just worked on a truck like this not to long ago, no codes started good cold but had to warm up a few and drove fine ran like this for long time, then the owner was on highway running along and truck started acting like fuel pump was going out. towed back truck started ran and drove great. anyway long story short traced prob to mass air flow sensor. swaped sensors between two trucks and problems switched with them. replaced mas air and truck runs great. something to check,

It's kind of unlikely that you would have an injector stuck open. They either work or don't from the electrical signal from the computer and throttle position sensor, but one could be clogged or irregular spray pattern, but that won't cause the hard starting. You can do a fuel pressure test to check to verify the fuel pressure. Check it right behind the throttle body, theres a valve that looks like a tire valve stem, hook the fuel pressure tester up to this port. Check it when its cold and drive it to get it warm(leave the pressure tester hooked up), once its warm don't shut it off check it while it's still running. Then shut it off and turn the key to the run position to see if you have fuel pressure to the throttle body. If you have at least 18-26 psi (double check required pressure from manual if you have one)then you don't have a fuel problem. You've just isolated down to the cam/crank shaft sensor. More than likely it will be the crank shaft sensor. They are more prone to failure than the cam shaft sensor.

Not going to say more than I really know for a fact, but was wondering if any of your friends might have a Superchips tuner that would work on yours. They would have to go back to stock to clear the VIN code, you would have to do the same thing when you are done, but my understanding is you can tweak lots of thing with one. Just be sure to get a later production Superchips if you try this, I understand some of the early production tuners COULD cause computer issues. Example: 2415 and 2715 fit the same trucks, the 2715 is the updated tuner, or so I have been told. DOUG

Ok, thanks for the replies. The truck has 207000 miles and the last tune up was at the end of 2007, which included plugs, wires, o2 sensor. The truck has no engine codes. It runs great when it starts, just rich. I called Dobbs today and one guy told me that it might be a cam shaft sensor and or a crank shaft sensor. I dont know where the cam shaft sensor is. Also if it is a leaking injector how do you know which one it is. Thanks for your help. Jerry

Let's start first with how many miles, any check engine lights, last tune up? (plugs wires fuel/air filters). If these items have been replaced recently in the past, then you need to look at scanning the system if you have a check engine light. If you don't have a light, the crank positioning sensor can be breaking down under heat which will make the truck a hard starter-have replaced a few of these, but one more thing to look at. Once truck is started, does it want to idle up and down a little-if so-your idle position sensor is also probably going out. This is a more common failure. Run some good injector cleaner through it, that will help remove the build up on the injectors. If one of the injectors were messed up, you should be able to tell by a miss or sluggish/ hesitatant take off.

You may have an injector stuck open. Too much fuel when cold helps it to start, but when hot just floods it out.
