I have a friend who has a 98 chevy with the 350 in in and with automatic trans. The truck has been using antifreeze we have been noticeing and now the truck is skakeing real bad when driving down the road with the motor is about 2200 rpm and also 10-20 mph. Would this be caused my a blown head gasket or a trans problem. Because before, the truck would start to shake and throw an engine light. And the computer would say "not fireing on #4 cylinder" We have replaced all of the plugs, wires, cape and rotor as well. The truck only has 64,000 miles. If you could help this would be great. Thanks

Jerry, it has been my experience that the intake gaskets are probably leaking. The newer antifreeze does alot of damage to the gaskets.

Pressure check the cooling system, and do a compression check of the cylinders.

You HAVE to fix the ENGINE problem, then address the TRANNY problem (which will probably disappear when the engine problem is fixed).

You have a code for a #4 misfire. Start there... pull the spark plug, and look at it for signs of coolant contamination. Does it look different than the other "plugs".

Likely, it will turn out to be a bad head gasket or a cracked head in the #4 cylinder area.

check the intake gasket. look between the valve cover and the intake and look for antifreeze. that model chevys were bad at intake gaskets leaking and getting into the cylinders. may still be a head but check the intake before taking off the head

Ok my friend father said it may need a motor because of the anitfeeze. He still hasn't looked at it yet but he said that anitfreeze might damage the cylinder wall and head. Is this true. And thanks for the replies

Being a tech at a Chevy dealer, I'm going to say check for leaking intake gaskets. ALL GM v type engines with the exception of the North Star Caddy have trouble with leaking intakes. Its not the coolant that causes the problem. Its the construction of the gasket. Plastic was not a good choice for this application. GM has redesigned the gaskets with an aluminum backing and bonded o-ring sealing material. The 3.8, 4.3, 5.0/5.7 engines use this new type gasket. Why the 3.1/3.4/3.5 engines don't have this new gasket is a mystery to me. When we use the new type gaskets they don't come back with leaking intakes ever again.
For your misfire, check your ignition system thoroughly. You still have a distributor cap and rotor that can wear out. Fix your leaking intake first.

Thanks alot. WE replaced the intake gasket and that solved the problem. Just threw us for a loop since it has been done once and the truck only has 65000 miles. Thanks for your feedback
