I am thinking of putting a performance chip in my '96 automatic F-250. It will give it about 75 more HP and about 180 more ft. lbs. of torque. It also gives about 3 more MPG. Will this chip decrease the life of my transmission and engine? The truck has about 186,000 miles on it, and it had a new tranny put in it at 150,000 miles. I would either get a Workhorse or Bullydog brand. All of the warranties and everything have expired on it, so what would be so bad about it. What do you guys, and girls, think?

I had a "99 f250 w/ an automatic transmission and decided to put a superchips programmer on it. I only ran it on the low and mid program, on both you could tell it had more power, but I never did notice the better fuel economy that they advertised it would do. And i ran it with the chip for a couple thousand miles. After that i decided to send it back. I tried another brand chip few months later and had the same results.

My advice is to just keep your truck the way it is, Stock. With that many miles and it never had a chip on it, I"d say that eventually things are going to break from the extra power. If you got the money to fix things whenever they break, then you could go ahead and get the chip.

Chips will definitely give you more power that you can feel, but dont be surprised if you don"t notice any better fuel mileage. Just speaking from experience here.

I have a 03 Duramax with a banks six gun tuner and cold air intake. Before I put it in I was getting 12mpg with a empty trailer. Now with the banks kit in the truck I am getting 18mpg with a empty trailer.

I had a '02 F-350 w/ the 7.3 liter from the day it was new it avg'd 12.3 MPG put a Chip in it avg' went to 21mpg empty 15mpg pulling trailer. that was figuring by the tankful and mileage, Electronics built into truck always showed better than that empty and worse when loaded. there was definite pulling advantage,

I had a 2000 Powerstroke with a chip in it and you could tell a pretty big difference in it with it on the 1st setting. By the way it was a "Superchip". I got rid of that truck and got a 2006 Powerstroke. The new truck had way more power then the 2000 even with the chip. I got a good deal on another superchip for the 2006 so i got it. I also noticed a jump in power, but not as much as the old one did. However when they came out with this new fuel(junk) it seems like the truck is running like it is stock again on the first setting.. That is just my experiance anyway.. I do get about 2 more miles per gallon with it,but you can't run it hard cause it won't make a difference. I think your better off spending money on fuel additives so you can protect your engine from this junk we are getting from the pump these days. That will improve the life of your engine.

I prefer performance Chips because I ate Cheetos once on a Road Call to Fix a Bigger Kubota and it made a real mess of my Hands.

Sheeze! I had to pull over and wash the Cheeto Build up off my hands.

I've got an Edge Comp box on my '99 Dodge 2500 and while I don't have any exact numbers my fuel economy has improved some. I am convinced my engine will last longer with the chip (I'm running a 60hp setting) because the chip has the engine running for peak performance and not EPA standards like from the factory. When I'm towing with my truck my EGTs run about 200° cooler with the Comp turned on than stock, if it's making another 60hp and still running that much cooler it tells me the timing, fueling and boost are all matched much better than how the factory had it programmed. When you get up into the newer common rail engines the chips can do even more and it's amazing how much power you can get out of them.

I would just buy a bigger truck, if I had the money laying around. With this, I can get the extra horse power for a fraction of the cost of a different truck.

Neighbors Dodge diesel got 2-3 more mpg with a muffler delete and chip. The idea is that the chip changes the timing of the fuel pulse for better torque, higher temps, more efficency but at the cost of higher emissions. Mostly in NOx from the higher temps.

On a ford (or GM or Dodge) the auto tranny's will suffer. Expect to need to rebuild them as the extra torque makes the slip. A 'performance rebuild' is needed so it can take the extra power. Also the torque converter will need to be replaced. (probably). Your insurance may take a hit too!

Ive got a chip for my 01 powerstroke and i wanted to check the milage. I drove a whole tank with it cranked up all the way. It got like 12.9 averaged out. Then i drove turned down and it got 12.5. I drove it real easy without beating on it. When its turned up my electronic gauge thats built in the truck says im getting like 22-25mpg.

To produce more power, with no other changes, it is necessary to burn more fuel --- which cannot result in better mileage.
Some day I would like to see a 'Mythbusters' on the subject.
Regardng the results of the extra power, I think the little voice in the back of your head is telling you the answer...all you have to do is listen to it.
Just my humble opinion....

I have a 1998 Dodge 3500 with 24 valve Cummins with a 5 spd and 4.10 gears. I bought a Hypertech programmer with 3 power settings. I set it in the middle mode. The horsepower and torque increased tremendiously. The truck has a utility bed full of tools-Welder-Oxy -Acet cylinders and Air compressor. I pull A 20ft. trailer and 2 tractors to tractor pulls. I have put about 8000 miles on the truck since installing it and the fuel milage has increased by about 2 MPG. Believe it or not!!!

Well I think some other people will chime in with additional information. But I think that the truth is if you are out there trying to experiment with the additional power, and tearing up the road. Yeah you will break things. I you are trying to have more pulling power in high gear, have more mpg, and don"t abuse the power - no the chips don"t seem to have adverse effects in and of theirselves.

Now correct me if I am wrong. YOU ARE GOING TO BEAT THIS TRUCK UP - AREN"T CHA. COME ON BE HONEST.

The chips seem nice. To take full advantage of them there are associated upgrades like exhaust, and intake that seem rather important. And if you are pulling trailers like crazy tranny coolers, intercoolers, billet torque converters, oil coolers. Chip is a good start.

CAN ANYBODY GIVE ACTUAL MPG NUMBERS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THESE ECU UPGRADES?
