Thanks everyone for the info. It sounds like they get sticky on this subject. I am looking at buying a truck with a sleeper that has most items required to be an RV. I figure it would be cheaper to license and insure that way. I would only be hauling my personal items.

I think "eric" has the hot tip of the day. The enforcement officers have seen every scam there is and they don't like getting scammed. Any leaway they may have given you is (poof!) gone.

Of course that only applies if you are wanting to pull a fast one with a hauler and just call it an RV. For all I know, you're honest as the day is long. In that case, you usually need a sink, potty and sleeping quarters.

Check the RV websites, RV.net, escapees.com, etc. There"s always a number of discussions going on with regard to converting medium & heavy duty trucks to RV"s.

I did an extensive search of the DOT rules on their website, and never did find a good definition of an RV. I did find, however, that the DOT"s own interpretation of the rules specifically exempts recreational vehicles as long as they"re not used in a commercial venture. A vehicle registered as a motorhome is obviously an RV, regardless of whether it"s pulling some sort of a trailer or not. There is a definition of what constitutes a motorhome, and each state has their own rules.

You can also buy one already converted - they"re called toterhomes, and are commonly used by the horsey and racing sets.

By the way, the federal DOT rules specifically exempt the occasional transport of personal property, with the exception of the requirement for a CDL. As long as what you"re towing with is registered as a motorhome, you also don"t need a CDL according to the DOT rules.

First off your truck needs to be a RV to license it as one. If you have a truck or bus that you converted to a RV then you will need an inspection by your state DOT to see if it passes their test as a RV. Most times this means a bed but a potty is also needed in some states.

If your question is what does it change???
You become exempt from all DOT "commercial" rules. CDL; DOT #; log books; scales; ect.
You still need to follow DOT safety rules.

if you licence your truck as a rv, it must be used just for that either carring your camper or pulling one or your boat or your toys, if the law sees you rolling down the road with your gooseneck full of hay or tractors, you are in a lot of expencive trouble
