What do you think or know? Has the price of fuel and the price of scrap caused a jump in the price of used equipment or has it caused the price to go lower or has it had any affect at all?

I believe that the grain prices have had a huge effect on used equipment prices. A year ago I was looking at a 9600 John Deere combine with 2000 hours. They were asking 28000 for it. I decided to wait a year then shop for a combine. When I started to look again the same model combine with around the same hours is now bringing 45000 on todays market. Big price difference over a one year period.

I've seen a lot of antique farm machinery going to the junk yard. I've seen John Deere 5 and 6 bottom plows, Farmall tractors, and hay balers in the junk yard while I'm sliding off household scrap. I've seen prices at auctions going up too. The prices I see at auctions are mostly forklifts and industrial stuff around here, but things that are incomplete are selling for as much as good running machinery. I've seen the junk yards getting more anxious to get junk, too. Last summer the junk yard that I had been going to for years had told me to take stuff to the other junk yard in town because it had too much plastic. I had a load of steel with no plastic the other day and took it to the junk yard that sent me away, and they asked me where I had been. I told them I had stuff they didn't want. They said they can take the stuff now. Their price went up $50.00 a ton, and they plan to raise it again. I heard the guy telling the guy unloading next to me that they are starting to get their old customers back.

From what I have seen the price of used tractors up to this point have been high. Most 10 year old tractors are running darn near what the equivalent new models are in the 40 to 75 hp range. I haven"t had bad luck on equipment though. My haybine and baler both cost $500 a piece. I purchased both in the last two, or so years. The tractors though baffle me, you have to luck for reasonable prices on the horsepower range I mentioned above, and don"t now what market pressures are at play. Maybe more people can use these size tractors than the larger hp"s, so the resale value is better?

I was just having this exact discussion over the weekend!!! I look for older Case tractors that I can save from the scrap yard and it seems like over the past couple of months what I could buy for $600-$800 is now priced $1200-1500? I just don't understand. I mean I work on these because I enjoy doing it but I also like to make a little to invest in the next one. Prices on the "re-storable" tractors are making it difficult to get the money back out of the "Restored" tractor.
