I have a 1999 Chevrolet with the 6.5 turbo diesel. Prior to this, I had a 1996 6.5 turbo diesel. Both of these trucks run at about 170 degrees in the winter time, despite having 190 degree thermostats. Doesn't kick out much heat to warm the feet and defrost the windows. Have other 6.5 TD owners had this problem? Is there a fix? Truck will run @ 200 degrees in the summer.

Where's your winterfront?

Bob...I talked to a couple of other 6.5TD owners and they said the grill curtains (e.g. Lund's Cold Front)will bring it up to 170 degrees faster, but not above 170. What's been your experience?? Thanks!

I'm in northern ND, so it gets COLD here.

I can REALLY notice a difference in the cab temperature on a COLD day when the winterfront is on.

I can't say it brings up the coolant temperature a whole lot, but keeping the air warmer under the hood DOES seem to make it easier to keep the cab comfortable.

(Those engines have a high bypass coolant flow to prevent "hot spots" in the block, and some warm coolant MUST sneak into the radiator when the thermostat(s) is closed, for as cool as they run in the cold, when lighly loaded.)

Since you are dicussing a 6.5 can anyone explain what controls the rpm's on a 2000 model? It now idles at 1200 rpm's for about 2 min's,then slows to 600. But the excelerator is very erattic.I asked on Dieselplace website but I suppose nobody thinks I have enough gadgets on my truck. Thanks for any ideas,Tx Jim

That is normal. the only way the temps go up is working the truck. Mine has had a idle up circut add to it for PTO work it will heat up a little if allowed to idle at 1000 rpm. as soon as I turn it off it goes right back to cold.
