I am repairing a 120 year old log house for my neighbor right now. They added a dormer and a wing around two sides. The old part is a two story. It has sunk about two feet in places. Where the big redstone chimneys are has not sunk as they had a good footer. What ever you do get good wood, decide which inside rooms you want to drywall, put a good footer under it and keep it up off the ground. You would not believe the houses I have repaired that would not have needed it if the builder had poured a wider footer and layed one more row of blocks. You can haul dirt in but it is more difficult to remove enough dirt around a "low" house to get a good grade. Especially on a small lot. Neighbors don"t like it when you run water over on their property. There seems to be a lot of log cabin suppliers in Tennessee. Good suppliers "dry fit" the logs before they ship them. This is long but I hate to see people get burned because some jerk wants to make an extra buck. Good luck.

Pottsie, I would recommend buying the Log Home Guide for builders and buyers if it is still available. They have an annual directory that is just full of companies that will sell you one or ways to build your own. If you can't find it on the newsstand, heres their address:
Muir Publishing Co.Ltd.
PO Box 1150,
Plattsburg,N.Y.

That is a very broad question. The best advice that I can give you is to read Building and Restoring the Hewn Log House by Charles McRaven, published by Betterway Books. Any bookstore can order it for you. It is the best $18.95 that I have ever spent on the subject of log cabins. I would be happy to answer any specific questions, I do have a bit of experience with log cabins and the tools of the trade. Good Luck!!!
