I have a drain plug in the head of my engine that I need to remove. It has a 5/16 square hole in it. I have not been able to find a tool and was thinking of buying a piece of key material and welding it into an old socket. Does anyone know where you can get a tool to fit this drain plug?

Thanks in advance

Bob T

a chisel or punch might fit into the hole. If not, you can get a piece of keystock and try that, turn it with a wrench, vice grips, or a socket that will fit on it. I wouldn't ruin a good socket by welding it in.

If it won't break loose, you might have to heat the plug.

I had the same problem with the drain plug in my hydraulic system. A search of my tool box turned up a craftsman 5/32" center punch and an adjustable wrench. The top of the punch fit the plug perfectly. I don't know offhand if they make a 5/16" punch but it might be worth a check.

Bob T --

I'm pretty sure that SK is now making a range of male-square drain plug sockets.

Snap-On PN (PPM516) used to remove 1/2 square recessed Cummins oil pan drain plugs. Much stronger than end of 1/2 extension or ratchet head because it is not cross drilled for the retaining ball.

use an old 3/8 drive extension. grind it to fit. the key stock will likely twist and fail to extract the plug because it is of a mild (1018) steel.

happy motoring!

Are you sure a 3/8 drive won't fit it? Does it need cleaning out?

No, tried a 3/8 and then grinding it down. The extension twisted and broke. I even went as far as buying a plug to insure that the size was correct off the engine before attempting it again. I heard Snap-On makes a tool, but can't find it.

I usually find a short square headed bolt with the head the size to fit the square hole and weld a hex nut to it.

Good Luck,
Dusty
