Use of non-detergent oil in old Allis-Chalmers

I have read conflicting articles and am very confused. I just purchased a 1945 Allis-Chalmers WC and was told by the previous owner to use non-detergent oil only. One article said that detergent oil will clog the oil ports. Another said detergent oil suspends foreign material and will drain it out. What should I use? Thanks

Paul, I sold AC equipment for my father from 37 - 62. There was always a discussion concerning the proper oil to use in machines. If your previous owner was using non detergent oil in the engine I would suggest you stick to it. Here ae my reasons why. The Allis you have is 55 years old. The previous owner was using non detergent oil. That means that unless the unit has been overhauled recently that there will be a build up of sludge and gunk in the engine. That is not good but if you consiser this that sludge and gunk may be what is keeping the tractor running right. The sludge and gunk may be keeping the unit from burning oil. I had this happen on a B tractor we sold in about 59. The tractor was electric and about 15 years old at that time. My customer and friend Harry put the very best oil he could get in it which was high detergent oil. After a few days of use he came back and said the unit was not running well. It was missing and spitting. That does not go with a B. We checked the tractor and found that it was almust pumping oil. We gave Harry two choices he could do an overhaul or go back to non detergent oil and let the gunk build up again. He went back to 30 wt oil and the tractor ran fine. He got a few more years out of it. If the previous owner used non detergent oil continue till you want to overhaul the engine. Sorry I got windy but I have put in my two cents on this more than enough. Oils are much better now than when equipment but remember you are using a unit that is 55 years old. Good Luck! Bill Long

I have 7 old tractors, and I only use detergent oil in them . there has been huge discussions on tractor tales about this topic And for all the views expressed pro and con, I don't recall a single person having damaged a good running engine by switching to detergent oil. I'm sure that the sludge that non-det. allows to build up will wear away slowly, same way it was deposited, with the use of detergent oil. search the archives for more on this topic there are many threads regarding it.....
