The seal is leaking on the right front. The seal doesn't appear to be flush with the end of the axle but recessed. How big of a job is it to replace the seal?

Its a big job Bud. The whole front end has to come apart as the seals are installed from inside the diff. You should replace both left and right sides and do the pinion seal as well and wash out the housing and axle tubes as they will be filled with dirt. There is a special tool from OTC that presses both of the seals in at the same time. You can use a large socket but should buy a extra (3rd)seal as the OD of the seal is thin/flimsy and you will probably destroy at least one.The job opens up a can of worms as you may find gear set, bearing wear or loosness problems once apart. Good Luck! Dieseldog

Bud, you didn't say if it's a 10, 20 ,or 30 series truck. They all repair about the same but the bigger ones are harder to take apart and parts are a lot heavier. If you do most of your own repairs on your vehicles you won't have very much trouble (it isn't rocket science) But first why is it leaking? could just be a plugged vent, or worn U-joints,or loose carrier bearings. If you decide to tackle it, get a service manual then plan on not driving the truck for a couple of days. That job can be done in about 4 hours if you have done it before. It will take considerably longer if its your first time or it is very rusty. You also might find other problems after you take it apart & have to order parts. Let me know if you decide to tackle it, I will see if I still have a repair manual that goes back that far & will e-mail you some scans of the repair procedure & illustrations.

Hey Okie Bud Im a Okie too. Now for your problem; what I understand is that your axle seal is leaking on the front axle shaft. First answer is yes this is a big job. I had the same problem on a 86 Chevy 4x4 1/2 ton that I had a few years ago. The seals are in fact recessed to be exact they are just to the left and right of the differential. The third member will have to be removed and both axle shafts will have to be removed in order to pull the third member. You will have to disassemble both hubs and pull both spindles to get the axles to slide out. There are some other very important steps that should be followed that I have not listed. If you are still interested in tackling this project e-mail me and I will be happy to walk ya through it step by step. I learned this the hard way. Also check your axle shaft u-joints for slop cause more than likely they are out and this is the cause of the leak. Email me at [email protected] Good Luck!!!
