Here is what some say...

Get the rust of the runners
Use a fine grade steel wool to get them smooth
Bowling alley wax

Take all the posters advice that you need and after the sled course gets broke in pretty good, pour some water down it and let it freeze. Take your cell phone in case she gets away from you.

Yup --- polish those runners till they shine and then coat them with a FAST downhill ski wax. A propane torch will help apply and work out the wax. If you can't get ski wax plain old parafin, like your grandma used on top of her strawberry jam, works just fine.

Yeah, but it's illegal to possess or distribute the substance that makes reindeer fly.

Martin, if you want it to go really fast..... .Install a -Pratt & Whitney F119-PW-100 jet engine, it has over 35,000 lbs of thrust and it is steerable with thrust vectoring. Probably get mac 1.5-2 out of it. Good luck and wear your seat belt. Now if you just want to keep it sub-sonic, your steel wool & wax thing should work good. I would heat the runners slightly & use a good fast ski wax.

The main thing is to reduce friction anyways possible. 1.Very smooth runners.
2.Long narrow runners.
3.Light sled.

If you are using the sled on a hard surface - ice or packed snow the narrower the runners the less drag there is - however the main usefulness of runners is to support weight on snow and the wider or longer the runners the more the weight is distibuted over a soft snow condition. Eskimos prefer long narrow runners however they are in wide open areas and not concerned about turning. In the good old days they used "snowshoe runners" behide horses. These runners were a combination of wide and narrow. There was a narrow runner attached along the center under the wide runner. In soft snow the full width of the runner carried the load but if a hard surface was encountered then only the narrow runner made contact with the hard surface. Good luck with your speed! AK

Clutching, Clutching, Clutching. Your CVT is THE most important element in getting the power to the ground. What type of sled do you have? After you get it clutched right, maybe even after an aftermarket clutch kit, the next step would be increasing HP.
