I had problem with this on my tractor and even had generator rebuilt and new volt reg. It did ok for a short while and then had charging problems again. I finally took the service mans advise and just bought rebuilt GM
Alternator with built-in volt-Reg switched to 12 volt neg grnd system. Have been happy every since.
Then I could even use my 12 volt toys on tractor,Radio Etc.....No longer confusing when charging or jumpstarting any more also. I still have originl generator in a box in my shop to remind me how eneficient it was. Also to keep original parts for furture.
Hope this helps.
