Has anybody had any experience with an after market gear box (sometimes called a browne box) that goses on behind the transmisson on trucks that gives you a stright and/or over/under? Are they worth the cost?
Whats the chance of finding a used one?

spicer built many 4 speed backboxes they can be found in any truck salvage. they are rated by the ammount of torque they can handle. 7041 was used behind 427 chevy & 3208 cat, 8341 will stand diesel engines to 1200 ft/lbs torque. if you are looking to install in p/u 7041 is large enough for powerstroke ford. 3rd gear is direct 4th is .75 od 1st & 2nd are underdrive. the last 7041 i bought was under$1000. 8341 is higher they are not as obsolete as the 7041. e-mail if i can be of assistance

I have located a 7041 and am interested in putting it in my 97 powerstroke. Questions:
Will it work behind an automatic ie shift on the fly?
Will I have enough ground clearance?
Is it easy to adapt the drive shafts?
I deliver new rv's from manifacture to the dealers and am looking for better fuel mileage and hill climbing ablilty. I just installed a 3.73 rearend and belive the two lower gears will help on the hills if I can shift on the fly.
I am courious why you have used the 7041.
By the way, thanks for the info I found. I have been looking for a couple of hours for the ratios of the 7041 and you gave the only info that I have found, I was ready to give up.
