Any ideas on how to take care of frost up problem with emglo compressor on my service truck? It has a 10 hp honda engine running a 2 stage compressor. The carb was icing up until I started holding an empty 5 gal bucket over exhaust directing heat onto carb for 2-3 minutes till up to temperature.Problem solved. No matter how often I drain moisture from tank, frost gets into air fittings, pressure overload, and pressure control valve. I bought this machine new 1 1/2 years ago and can honestly say this is the poorest piece of equiptment I have ever owned. It has been back in the shop for warranty/ repair work at least 10 times since I have owned it! Enough said. Hopefully cold spell in Northeast will break and problem will correct itself. Mike

Mike:

We build Honda powered gas driven service truck units and there has been a service bulletin issued regarding the problem you mentioned. Hi tech solution? Cover the circular vents at the pull start with duct tape to reduce the amount of cooling air being supplied to the engine. It gets down to -30c -40c regularly here in the winter. You could try putting a small lubricator filled with a good quality low temperature air tool oil in line with the controls. We sell an in house brand of oil called Polar Guard that has a -65c pour point and mixes completely with any water. We keep two samples of air tool oil mixed with water on our front counter. Ours is a complete lemon-colored mixture of oil and water while our competitors oil sits there with a distinct demarcation line between the water and the oil that sits upon it. With our oil the water is expelled with the air as it exhausts. Not claiming any magical technology, just telling you what I have seen with my own eyes.

Mike if I understand your post, it is your carbeurator frosting up. Years ago (1959) I had a Volkswagon doing that in Germany. Frost would form on the carb and intake tubes all the way to the cyl heads. I would pour about a cup of alchol in the full fuel tank and cure the problem. If you have a separate tank for the compressor, give this a try. Leon

Mike, you might try leaving the tank bottom drain valve open slightly while the compressor is running. Or put on a heated automatic tank drain, (from a school bus, or truck with air brakes). I don't know what you do with the air, but if a little alcohol in the air won't hurt, you can put on a truck alcohol injector (used to keep air brakes from freezing on big trucks). If the compressor has a discharge air cooler you might remove it for the winter. Mike, if you find a cure for your problem post it,water in the air is a big problem in the winter in cold states.

Would it be too much trouble to put a Bendix Westinghouse air dryer on it like is on a semi.
