I wounder if anyone can assist me? I would like to find a manual, or The firing order, for a "Spot Air"."Ingersol-Rand-Co" Air compressor. Has a patent no. of 2614497. MODEL No. 3-R-36. Possibly 20-30 year old. ENGINE bore 3 1/8 inches. COMPRESSOR 3 inches. STROKE 2 1/2. RPM 1800. Air Cooled Cylinders.
Has 6 Cylinders, 3 of these compress, other 3 fire. Has MAGNETO spark. It's a radial like engine similar to an airplane engine. Pistons move horizontal to ground. Also has an oil sump. I believe this machine once powered air tools in a building company and was later used to power a post hole digger. It sat idle for many years and siezed up. The firing order was lost when the machine was being freed up.Maybe someone might know the firing order. Ingersoll-Rand-Co offices in Australia have been unable to throw any light on the matter and believe the machine must be of some vintage. ..any info at all would be appreciated. I am a resident of Western Australia. All the best from West Aussie Noel Money.

Noel, Sounds pretty neat,a radial air compressor!Would love to see a picture of that!Anyhow, you can figure out the firing order.First, lable the 3 firing cylinders 1,2,and 3.It dosent matter where you start but mark them. Second, (Assuming this is a 4 cycle engine) (intake & Exhaust valves)Turn the engine in its direction of rotation, put your thumb over the spark plug hole and feel when your #1 piston is moving towards the head and compressing air as it is comming to top dead center that cylinder is getting ready to need a spark. Hence this cylinder ,when @ TDC should corospond to which ever wirethe magneto rotor is pointed to.If the magneto has an impulse coupling (Clicks or snaps while turning over slowly)this will be the wire that just sparked while being held near an appropriate ground.Continue turning the engine over by hand to see which is the NEXT cylinder to come up on compression. this will corospond to the next wire on the magneto getting ready to fire. #3 will be the only one left! Hope this helps, let us know how you make out !E-mail me if you would consider sending a picture of this! (Air powered post hole digger ;VERY interesting!)
