Hi Everybody,
On Dec. 2nd, Alan K. posted an RE to the gentleman who inquired as to the best way to prep an old plow for painting. Alan made reference to a product called Rassonil. Today, I got an e-mail from that company in regard to a distributorship. It sounds like a miracle product of sorts. Has anyone used this before? Would you mind telling me how well it worked and what you paid for it? They claim a gallon treats 18,000 sq.' I questioned that. They didn't mean to say 1800. They meant 18,000. It also is said to remove scale after heat treat and prep all metals ferrous and non-ferrous for painting or welding. It is also said to be non toxic, non flammable, and so on. Yea man. I can sell the heck out of this stuff it does half what they claim.
Thanks for your time,
Steve

Here is the company info. I got today. I was looking into this product too. The price with ordering information is given below. All orders & shipping are done directly from our Huntsville, AL location by UPS ground.

Price List (Small packaging) :

16 oz = $23.95 + $7.50 (s & h) = $31.45, covers 200 sq.ft. on bare metal surface

1 gal = $67.95 + $12.00 (s & h) = $79.95, covers 1600 sq.ft. on bare metal surface

Note : The 16 oz size is a spray bottle. For the gallon container, any ordinary plastic spray bottle can be used for spraying. The coverage shown are the estimate of application by simultaneously spraying and brushing. Only one coat is needed (on bare metal, the cost of the product comes out to be few cents per sq.ft.). Shelf life of Rass-O'-Nil is more than 3 years after opening.

Hello Steve,
On thier compare sheet (http://www.icpi.net/Compare1.htm) under the Feature sub title, " Coverage of surface area", they state that one gal covers 640 sq. ft.on a rusted surface. I assume the less rust the thinner the film. Thier competive advantage over other products is given as, " most other products need more than one coat" . In other words on a rusted surface they don't quote thier coverage being much better than other one coat products.
Hard to speculate. I hope we get a response from several experienced user. I might try some of these car resto forums and see what I can find. If anybody knows any coating forums, etc. that might help? Best, Alan K

Thanks Alan,
I am anxious to see the data sheets on this material. What I have heard so far is that Rassonil has studies that have been done by some of their customers. These studies they claim have found incredible results. I still don't see personally how a gallon of anything spread 9 millionths of an inch thick can do a thing. I don't see how it can even be applied like that. We are living in the age of miracles for sure. But, I'm still a little like my friend from Missouri. They need to show me. After all, I'll be the guy standing there red faced if it doesn't do what they said it would. I'm a firm believer in a good CYA program.

A nieghbor here tried some. I did'nt see any water parting or burning bush with it.
It did go on a little smoother than Over-Rust, that's bout all I saw. We'll see after while how well it preserves.
I know Over-Rust works real good, but it's hard to sand smooth enough for use in body work.

Steve- 18000 sq. ft must be applied one molecule thick. I've been watching the same posts on this stuff as you have. If it just stops rust then all the other stuff it is supposed to do is just gravy. This is the kind of thing where,if it works, price may not be a consideration. Bo

I hear ya man. It would have to be .00009" thick. I haven't seen the spec sheet yet. I'm waiting for the trickle down effect to kick in. It must be diluted I'm thinkin'.

If it was some sort of catalytic action, I MIGHT believe it. For a coating, no way.

Hi Big Fred,
I'll bet whoever did that test diluted the heck out of a gallon and then filtered and reclaimed it somehow. If it does turn out to be a great product we will learn all sorts of angles from our customers. I've learned more from 'old timers' in the mines and in some of these big plants and job shops than you could get from a lifetime in school. I love to learn from people who know the things that aren't in the book.

Some of those guys can be a little testy though. One of my all time favorite customers and artists, ( that's what I call people who go to the next step beyond great welder) worked at Peabody #10, the largest underground coal mine in the world at that time. They didn't throw anything away until Mel said "It can't be fixed." He liked me and would help me anytime I asked for it. Sometimes I would just be making a routine sales call and Mel would say " Come over here and let me show you something kid". That meant a lot to me because if you worked there and asked Mel a question, if he even answered you at all or even acknowledged your existence he would just say "I got it the hard way, you can too."

This was over twenty years ago when I was getting started. I still get a good feeling every time I think about that old guy. One of the rewards of my job.
Steve
