Successful removal of stuck pistons

Despite the excellant suggestions, we were able to remove the stuck pistons with the use of a hydraulic press and oak wood.

Our main concern was cracking either a piston or sleeve as both are relatively expensive for replacement.

Since the D2 cat sleeves were built well, we decided to try one piston/sleeve for removal without heat or dry ice.

The press suprisingly pushed all 4 pistons out of the sleeves with no cracking at the sleeve skirt.

It was evident upon removal that the spray lubricants and other attempts to free up the stuck pistons didn't penatrate past the piston top or bottom as the walls of the sleeves were still dry.

Since the sleeves were not pit rusted they cleaned up nicely with light honing & oil. The pistons are also re-usable after gently chiping out the old rings (rusted) and cleaning the pistons.

Thanks to all for their suggestions.

After pressing pistons out, be sure to check for damage or cracks on landings between rings. Some times the landing will have cracked and is very hard to see[botom of groove).this can cause new rings to break and roll inside landing after eng. is up and running, which in turn can damage sleeves and more!

Be sure to check landings on pistons very close between ring grooves. Sometimes the landings will have cracked near their base from the piston. These landing will come loose from piston breaking new rings and allowing them to roll between piston and sleeve damageing sleeve and maybe more! New pistons is a safer way to go!
