Removing Drag Link Assy

I have a Ford 5000 with a wobbly drag link assy; how in the world do you remove it? After removing the nuts, I tried a ball joint separator with a sledge hammer to no avail. I even tried heating the link arm with a torch. Any tips? Thaks, Ron

Well, thanks for the advice on the subject. Last night I tried the bottle jack trick on the front one and it came apart fine . I then had a mechanic friend stop over for a free beer for the rear one. It made me look pretty pathetic! He took a swig of beer, picked up a 3 pound hammer, hit the female part of the pitman arm 5 times, hard, and pow! The thing came apart. Amazing - so much for ball joint separators and fancy tools! Thanks again.

I had the same problem on my '56 Fordson Major Diesel. I used a torch to heat the arm and forced 2 ball joint removal tools into the space...it came loose with a couple of good whacks with the sledge...with no damage...Good luck.

The first time that I did that (rear one), I was afraid of breaking the transmission housing. But the old mechanic on the other side said "You won't break that", "hit it". I did and he was right.But just sitting here thinking about yours, thinking about how cold it is outside, one thing I know for sure is if you want to break cast iron, just wait till it has frost on it. It breaks somewhat easier that way. Thought we ought to know. Fred from the Mung Factory

So far I've just tried a heavy slide hammer and a roofing hammer for the most part. I tried hitting a ball joint separator with a sledge hammer but that didn't work either. Do you mean I should be really be wailing on it with the sledge?

The front end can be lined up with a hole in the front bolster in front of the radiator, behind the grille. Line up the link end, Support the threaded end of the link with a bottle jack & cribbing. Then align a bar or pipe through the hole in the bolster to rest on the steering bellcrank next to the draglink and wallop the bellcrank down while the draglink is supported by the jack. The two hammer method works well for the rear where there is more room, if not apply pressure to the draglink with a prybar while using the two-hammer deal. Good Luck, you will succeed!

I'll go ahead and get a bottle jack to try that on the front end. I'm still trying to figure out the 2 hammer trick, as previously described. I did try hooking a 3 pronged heavy duty slide hammer on the drag link assy and even with prying on the threaded part, the only thing I got was some ringing in my ears and a sore wrist.

I use two hammer method with pretty good results.Ya take one hammer and put it on one side of female part then strike on oppisite side with other hammer.I you can get a bottle jack on thread side that can help, however make sure to leave nut on part way so it all don't don't come screaming at ya.

Hmmm! I may not be getting this right. You put one hammer against the female part (to stabilize it?), and then strike against the opposite side?

Do you mean you are just hitting the female part, or are you hitting the drag link, trying to pry it apart from the female part?

Youv'e got the hammer part right, use one as an anvil and belt the pitman arm socket opposite your 'anvil'. Use a minimum of 3lb hammer. If you have a helper, pry the draglink in the direction it needs to move to come apart. Don't be afraid to really belt it. Heed the above caution about really cold iron, though.

We have had good luck using the air hammer. Screw the nut on a bit so the air hammer wont dance off and go at it. Good luck!
