Rusty plow, should I paint it?

Just bought a used, but in good shape, and VERY rusty two-bottom turning plow. Not a spec of paint left on it. I plan to paint it, if for no other reason to make me feel better. Asked the used implement dealer (who has the equipment) how much to sandblast and paint it. Wow! Yeah, I'm gonna do it. Question here is: Should I have it sandblasted before I bring it home, and then immediately prim and paint it myself. Or should I just wire-brush it, spray with some of that rust conversion stuff, and then paint it? What's the best proceedure? Thanks for your input. -Gale-

I agree with george, OSPHO is great stuff, I put it on everything. I even smacked some on the ole cats butt last spring and it hasn't rusted since.

Must admit JustCurious, that I was so shocked by the price to blast and paint that I dropped it there. Only paid $225 for a very nice (except for the rust) Dearborn plow. Sure as hell wasn't gonna put another $150 in it for the paint. Was almost as shocked when I went to the local rent-all place where I usually rent a half-day trailer for $10; but they just doubled the price, and I walked away from that. Didn't wanna have that 300/400 lb plow in the back of my pickup with no real good way to unload it. But guess that's what I'll do. Man, ain't nuttin cheap anymore eh? -Gale-

When you get it home, tie it to a tree & drive off. Voila, it's unloaded.

Rick I been there and done that. Don't unload it like that. The beam broke on mine doing it like that.

I think Rick was joking. Although that'd certainly get it off the truck, might also tear the tailgate off. To make a long story short, I got it home without the truck. Just too dang awkward to try and manage in the pickup. Wouldn't even feel comfortable with that much weight on my beam-pole. Sad thing, when I got it home without dropping it in any way, I discovered the plow-shear on one of the bottoms was broken about two-thirds way back at the bolt line. Now trying to decide whether to replace or try and weld it.

Thanks for the input anyway. Happy New Year. Gale

I've used ospho on rusty metal stair railings exposed to salty sea air with great results. Just wire brush the loose rust and paint over the hard rust. Next day you paint over the ospho as it also acts as a primer. Have not yet tried it on my rusty back blade but I plan to soon.

It contains phosphoric acid, dichromate, wetting agents and extenders. (pretty smart huh) I read it on the label. It changes iron oxide to iron phosphate and is basicaly a prep for primer. I've sprayed it on bare metal and left outside to rust. It still looks good after 3 months. The last jug I bought was at a paint and body supply store for roughly 20 bucks a gallon. It's thin like water so it goes a long way.

Interesting subject rust. I'm in the process of trying to decide on which is the best STUFF. From what I've gathered most of it is just a cover up that slows down the oxidation (rust) process. However there is a new product called Rass-o'nil which I have not tryed but haven't yet heard anything bad. So then what's to lose, if the rest dosen't really work why not go with a wire brush and Rass-o'nil. I haven't sent for any yet but plan to. You can check out thier site: Link Hope this helps.
